Hi All

Thought I'd share my latest effort. This is a P4 layout plan constructed directly from a scanned Ordanance Survey Map dated 1905 of Exeter Queen Street (LSWR)

Specifically, just the area between the two road bridges (New Road North, and Howell Road) is modelled.

The only compromises to the original layout are:

1) the bottom left of the plan (in reality this the bottom two exit tracks cross on an acute diamond, but I needed an easy exit for the traverser / cassette fiddle yard)

2) the turntable is moved slightly right (to avoid straddling a baseboard joint)

3) the crossover between the up and down main (centre left of the plan) has been moved slightly to the right towards the diamond crossing, also to avoid a baseboard joint

4) The top left exit from the goods sidings is a single slip (in reality it is a really like a three way overlaid on a diamond!) Again I needed a simple exit to the fiddle yard

There appears to be a duplication of crossovers at the top of the plan (where the cattle dock was sited in reality) but these are on the 1905 map, and verified by photographic evidence. Persumably there were to allow more direct access to the said cattle dock. (Photos suggested they were hand worked)

Just for information, the turntable, coaling stage are from the original LSWR Exeter Queen Street loco shed and the carriage sidings are the original shed roads. (Photos seem to suggest the inspecttion pits were filled in). In 1910, one wall and some outbuildings from the original shed were still standing just below the bottom carriage siding in the plan.

All trackwork was constructed from LSWR 45' Track Panels, custom switches for LSWR No 1 and LSWR No 4 switches (1891 geometry), LSWR buffer stop and LSWR 1:7 slips. These were drawn separately in Templot and imported as a track library.

Should you view the layout, best to hide the labels!

Cheers

Phil

Hi Phil,

That's very impressive. :thumb:

I did notice in a few places that you don't have a full 6ft way running clearance between adjacent tracks. It would be worth checking over the plan with the spacing-ring tool -- tools spacing-ring menu item.

Click the set ring > p-s button on the dialog to pre-set the ring diameter to the correct 6ft way for your scale.

SHIFT+CTRL+F9 mouse action to move the spacing-ring over your plan.

You can leave copies of the ring dotted about on the plan, to help you re-align templates later. Click the ring copies > make button.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks for the feedback Martin will do that, the original map is quite a small scale so I couyld have easily introduced some errors.

Also as usual I guess photographic evidence of the same area does not always agree with the map!

Having drawn up the plan, I have now discovered it won't fit in my house :(, but I will still keep it in mind for future reference as I already have some of the stock in hand to build

regards

Phil
