Out here in the hills (mid Wales) 512K broadband is the max I can currently get.

However... the speed is genuine, every test I've done gives something pretty close to that, and the upload speed is near the max. On a couple of occasions recently when the phone bit collapsed the broadband kept going without a problem.

My ISP is NDO (now part of Namesco) and they have been fine as well.

If you have had broadband for more than about 18 months it may be worth asking your provider to upgrade you to the BroadbandMax system from BT. Earlier systems were set at a fixed speed. BroadbandMax goes at the fastest speed it can make the line work. Nildram are currently offering such an upgrade at no cost for long-established connections.
My ISP is NDO (now part of Namesco) and they have been fine as well.
Templot.com and this forum are hosted by NDO/Namesco. As you say, absolutely fine, and good support. The fact that they are just down the road from here helps. :)

A couple of weeks ago came the news that Pipex/Nildram have been taken over by Tiscali.:( A mass exodus is widely predicted. PlusNet are offering a special Hello for Nildram refugees. At present I'm waiting and seeing. But if the broadband service goes downhill, it's over to NDO I shall be going.

I guess this is a different name for what I call MaxDSL.  It is good, and it might be worth mentioning that it's continuously active in adapting your line speed - not just a one-time setting.  The catch (and don't let that put anyone off) is that it can sometimes take a few days to come back up to speed if it's been reduced for some reason.  Today my connection has synced at 6784kbps which is a little low, but tomorrow it might be back up to it's more normal 7200-ish kbps, or down a bit more!  And to think My First Internet was through a 9600 baud mobile phone.  How did I cope? :)

In practise though, my connection "feels" a lot faster now than it used to, but that is probably also down to a switch from PlusNet to Zen.
PlusNet are offering a special Hello for Nildram refugees.

Paul, as an ex PN customer, I was saddened and appalled at PN customer relations and business model that after much huffing and puffing I had to leave. Shame really as for 3 happy years they were great, never a lost connection etc..

Supposedly I have an 8mb Link but rarely get above 4.5mb, which I think is a bit of a con! and talking of first internet connections, mine was a 2400 baud connection on a old USR modem ahhh not so happy days.. :?:D

Not wanting to prolong an ISP discussion,  but I think you'll find that PN have restored a lot of their previous reputation since their take-over by BT Internet.  Certainly,  their newsgroups/forums would seem to indicate this.
