I’d appreciate some criticism of the attached plan for a club P4 layout that we’re just starting to build (we’ve built most of the fiddle yard baseboards).

The layout is based on Little Mill Junction, which is between Pontypool Road and Hereford on the North and West line. The branch went to Usk and Monmouth but in 1938 the yard was expanded from 4 roads to 8 at the same time as ROF Glascoed (which was served the branch) was coming into use. The track specification is meant to represent BR(WR) practice ca 1955.

I know there’s a substantial bit of work I need to do shoving timbers etc but I want to make sure that I’ve got the basics more or less right first.

Just bumping this topic. This is an impressive layout. Someone must have some comments for Rod?

Martin.

Thanks Martin.

We've started building the fiddle yard baseboards and develeloped a jig to help us solder up crossings (vees and wing rails) see here http://www.newportmrs.com/clubgoingson.htm. The story of the layout so far can be seen here http://www.newportmrs.com/littlemilljunction.htm. We're making progress but would still appreciate comments on the plan as this is the first serious Templot plan I've produced.

Cheers, Rod

PS I've also put an appeal for help on the Templot Talk section.

Hi Rod

Not really a "templot" comment (I am still very much an amateur!) but what is the purpose of the two short sidings in the "down" fiddleyard (templates 163 395 and 396? They look too short to take even an autotrain and look as though they are in the wrong place for engine storage. The diamond crossing to the mileage siding looks very odd, but as I haven't seen the prototype plan, I guess it must be right:)

Otherwise, to my inexperienced eye, it looks good - smooth curves and transitions a-plenty.

regards

Paul

Compared to the other scenic curves the curve to fiddle yard bottom right looks tight.  It's even tighter then we are considering on Awrhyllgwami where we don't have anywhere as much width available.

Don't you need a crossover outside the fiddle yard at the left hand end?

Paul and Richard - Thanks for your comments.

The two short sidings are intended for a railcar (GWR angular banana type) and a 0-4-2 and a push-pull coach. In fact I've had to modify them as they couldn't get out onto the up line - this is probably why Richard suggested the need for a (presumably trailing) crossover, We could have put a crossover in but instead I've changed the two sidings into a loop (see attached modified file) - this will allow the railcar ands push-pull to get onto the correct road (with out putting a crossover on the mail line).

The diamond is prototypical, it would have looked a bit anachronistic by the 'fifties perhaps, but it's use obviated the need for a facing point lock. Road access was from the V of the junction; there was none from the bottom side of the plan.

Richard, yes  the curve to fiddle yard bottom right is rather tight. You couldn't have know this but the branch drops at around 1 in 40 from the station and by the time it gets to the curve it will be hidden.

I still need to add the British Nylon Spinners' private siding on the inside of the curve (LHS), ensure that the clearances are ok on the curves and widen the 6' where there's girder bridge (RHS of scenic scenic section).

Thanks again

Rod
