Hi all,
I've just been asked the following question via email and I'm unsure of the answer:

"What would be the practical minimum radius to use to maintain a proper clearance between passing trains?"

The track gauge is 00-SF (16.2mm).

Any thoughts please?  Many thanks.

Regards,
Brian

The track gauge itself is of no great significance. The smaller the radii of the adjacent tracks, the greater the spacing between them needs to be. The length of the items of rolling stock will also have a bearing. 70ft stock on adjacent tracks will require a greater spacing than, say, early 45ft coaches because of the centre- and end-throw.

For a 4mm scale BR Mk1 coach 63'5" long, I calculate the following overhangs, all in mm.

Radius Centre End Total
500 8.7 7.4 16.1
600 7.3 6.2 13.5
700 6.2 5.3 11.5
800 5.4 4.7 10.1
900 4.8 4.1 9.0
1200 3.6 3.1 6.7
1500 2.9 2.5 5.4
1800 2.4 2.1 4.5
