Hi Martin,

I think I’ve found a fault in Templot 0.91c.

The suspect fault manifests it’s self in the below described way.

With a turnout template on screen and in control, whilst using the long winded method of dropdown menus ( not using shortcut keys) to adjust the length of the turnout I found the following results:

1. When I selected, < action >
                                     → < mouse actions: geometry >
                                                                           → < adjust plain-track length (F4) >

This came back with an F3 Approach Length screen, and adjusted the approach length of the template.

2. When I selected, < action >
                                      → < mouse actions: geometry >
                                                                           → < adjust approach length (F3) >

This came back correctly with an F3 Approach Length screen, and adjusted the approach length of the template.

1. When I selected, < action >
                                      → < mouse actions: geometry >
                                                                           → < adjust overall turnout length (F4) >

This came back with an F4 Overall Length screen, and adjusted the overall length of the template (both TS & MS sides in unison).

In addition at the start of the exercise that I was doing, before I introduced the turnout to control,
when I selected, < action >
                                 → < mouse actions: geometry >
                                                                           → < adjust plain-track length (F4) >

This came back with an F3/F4 Plain-Track Length screen, and adjusted the non peg end length of the plain track template correctly.

It all seems to go slightly wrong when a turnout template is in the control.

Now you may wonder why I was using the dropdown menus, this is because I was experimenting with a video screen capture program and trying to produce a tutorial video.

I was using Richard_t’s  Irregular Diamond Demonstration v2.pdf as guide and working through exactly as he described, this is why I did not use shortcut keys.

Sorry about this Martin, did not wish to add to your work load, but thought it worth a mention.

All the best,

Brian Nicholls.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for finding that. :thumb:

The mouse actions are working correctly, but the menu items are not showing correctly.

1. when the control template is a turnout -- adjust plain-track length (F4) should be disabled (greyed out).

2. when the control template is plain track -- adjust approach length (F3) and adjust overall turnout length (F4) should both be disabled (greyed out).

3. when the control template is a half-diamond -- all three menu items should be disabled (greyed out), and a new menu item adjust overall length of half-diamond (F4) should be enabled.

I seem to have got half-way through making some changes, and not finished it. I will get it fixed.

Thanks again.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for responding, did not mean you to burn the midnight oil on it though. :D

Although at the time of writing, and have not confirmed this, I believe if I had used shortcut keys, all would have been well with the making of the irregular diamond template (may have ago at the shortcut keys later today to check it out).

However, this dose leave me with the question of trying to describe, in a tutorial, operations using dropdown menus that are incorrect and one other that has yet to be put in place in the program.

Perhaps a small update to say, 0.91d  !!!

All the best,

Brian Nicholls.

Hi Brian,

My last reply was far too complex. :(

We need to revert to something simpler -- 2 menu items, not 4:

1. adjust template overall length (F4) should be enabled always.

2. when the control template is a turnout -- adjust turnout  approach length (F3) should also be enabled, and otherwise disabled (greyed out).

This will prevent F3 being used as an alternative to F4 on a plain track template (as it can be at present), but I think that is probably just adding unnecessary complication (even though internally it is actually the F3 mouse action which is used to adjust the length of plain track).

Sorry, I can't do a 091d with these changes, but I will post some screenshots shortly showing them which you can use in a tutorial.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thanks again for the reply.

It appears you have your work cut out in sorting these problems.

I would tend to agree with you in making things simpler by using less menu call outs (dropdowns), so long as all the appropriate contingencies are catered for and, in particular, it does not degrade the already brilliant Templot operations that are in existence at this time.

I still enjoy using Templot, and if it had not been the fact that I needed to put in place an irregular diamond crossing in the New Street layout, and decided to give Richard's demonstration a go, I may never have stumbled across this problem.

Well that’s it for now, I’m sure when we finally get the new upgrade you are preparing, most, if not all these niggling problems will be truly sorted.

All the best,

Brian Nicholls.
