Hello, I would be interested to hear of peoples choices for large format printing of Templot output. I am generally thinking of those devices that print on 24 or 36 inch wide paper rolls. Does anybody have any 'best buys' in this area ? What about the running costs ? - the technology will be mostly inkjet where the ink tanks are small but I guess there isn't much actual ink laid down especially with things like timber infill turned off. My last involvment with wide-format roll printing was with the old Benson plotters which I am sure some of you weill remember. We also had lots of early HP plotters at work. Most of these used modified fibre tip or roller ball pens to do the 'printing', you never did know when the ink was about to run out.....it usually did half way through an important job! Comments welcome. Anybody going to Halifax O gauge Saturday ?? Rob |

Hi Rob, I have access to an EPSON Stylus 9600 at work mainly used for printing posters in A0 on matt heavyweight paper but it does up to a maximum of 42" I spent quite a bit of time in the 90's installing and setting up lots of HP Designjet beam printers and the technology has come along some ways since then. As for running costs.. a roll of paper is about £100 and a set of 8 inks can be around 50-100quid then theres the print heads and the waste tank too ;) so all in all not cheap. I have yet to use it for Templot as I don't have anything that size I need to print... yet! Regards Tom |

I create an DXF, then in AutoCAD I convert it to a DNG which is a little smaller and take it into work where we have a Canon 650. Max paper size is 24" x 96" I think, although it does take a roll, it cannot do more than about 8' long. The 650 is nearly 5 years old and showing its age. But it hasn't been used a lot; it can sit for several weeks between plots. When it gets replaced in a couple of months time we're going to get a combined plotter scanner. If is didn't have access to it, I'd probably be looking at buying an A3 inkjet. |
