Hi, been playing around with an O gauge version of Ian Morton's Shake the Box layout following fun at the Birkenhead show last weekend.

To fit it all in in 8x4ft I've resorted to a single slip within the run-round for access to the sidings. I've based it on a modified A4 template and it's tight, looks like the checkrails on one side will not fit.

Sooooo, is it workable or do I have to start again with a turnout with a more gentle radius?

Martin, I'd appreciate your expert opinion

EDIT: just noticed the slip rails have disappeared, not sure why, but I'll have a go at putting them back!

cheers

Ian

Hi Ian,

1:4 is too short for an inside slip. The radius would be too tight and constructing the K-crossings would be extremely difficult. :)

The usual way to deal with such a situation is to use an outside slip instead, like this:

Your plan includes some A-4 turnouts. An A switch is really too long for a 1:4 V-crossing. You would get an easier radius, and have shorter turnouts to save some space, by changing to a 9ft straight switch instead. That's at template > switch options... menu item.

Your file contains 106 templates of which 91 are unused. If the unused ones are no longer wanted you can remove them by clicking the box > delete unused templates menu item on the storage box menus.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks Martin, I kinda thought that and have re-done it using a 1:6 switch, which works better although the check rails are still fouling the slip rail (if that's the right term). Love the outside slip - where's the tutorial for that one ;)

I noticed the multiple templates this afternoon and have started deleting the duplicates. I find it's all too easy to create copies though!

I've also morphed the single into a double slip :D

I think you're right (of course) about the A4 points, one is already in place, but there is scope for rejigging at least the Down Run Round Point to something more subtle. I'll have a play ....

EDIT: ah, see what you mean, the two points not already built are now 9ft and it all fits in better - cheers Martin

Been doing more fidding, redone the slip again with a Size B semi REA as the basis (with A slip) and done some more tidying.

Getting better methinks but would appreciate feedback :)

Those who saw me at the Mansfield Show would have seen the double slip under construction. Very happy with the results, although the sleepers need gapping and tiebars adding, but a parkside wagon runs through it really well, so should do the job!
