Hi All Can someone please help to save my sanity? When I boot up my PC a Hewlett Packard running Windows XP, everything goes as it should until just after the Desktop screen, then I get a screen come up from internet explorer which says that IE is unable to show the page, below which is a small box which says "diagnose this problem". This is not normally a problem admittedly as it is usually got rid of by clicking the X in the top right corner or Ctrl, Alt, Delete and using the task manager to close it. But in this case the screen is so large that it hides everything behind it, any ideas PLEASE. I had to resort to the laptop to send this. Many Thanks in advance Phil |

Phil, Sounds like your PC is starting up IE before it has an internet connection, hence the error message. I have come across the problem with the IE window being larger than screen size. Think you can get round it by closing with Task Manager still and then changing your desktop display properties to a higher resolution.This should make the IE window smaller. You can then reduce it's "Full Size" by dragging a corner in. Hope I'm right with this, it's been a while since I encountered the same thing. Ian |

Hi Phil Your IE is in full-screen mode - if you hit F11 it should go back to normal mode with the usual icons to allow you to close it. That doesn't explain why it's starting by itself but at least should give you control back! Hope this helps... |

Hi Phil One last attempt - have you got a multi-media keyboard where you have to hit the F-Lock key for the function keys to work? Otherwise, the Scotch sounds like a good idea. The 4am bit less so  |

Hi Phil, Press ALT+F4 to close IE (or any active Windows program). Then you can try to find out why it is launching on start-up. Or maybe switch to Firefox and make it your default browser? What you are seeing may be some other start-up program trying to access the internet and display a page. Try right-clicking on the page, and then Properties... to see which page is actually being sought. To download Firefox without IE active, click Start > Run..., copy and paste this into the box and click OK: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/ IE will open at that page, and then you should be able to click the download button. regards, Martin. |

There is a microsoft application, called autoruns, which will tell you what is starting when windows starts, and will allow you to disable them. But it's quite low level, and you kind of need to know what you're doing! Anyhow the program is available here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902 |

Hi All Some semblance of normality has returned, although IE has started itself again (twice) it is now normal page size and thus I am able to shut it down. My default browser for a number of years has been Firefox I have just checked it and it remains so, so I have no idea why IE is self starting. It might be related to a peculiar problem I get from time to time. I normally lauch my default web browser, Firefox, from the Web/Home button on my Microsoft keyboard. Every so often this launches IE instead. It appears to happen after some Windows updates. It's independant of the default browser setting. After a few hours things return to normal. I can only assume that this is a side effect of the update process. |
