I have been using Templot for off and on for several years as and when the need arose. I have just started on planning for my new layout which is prototypical. I have had the track plan scanned and I am using this as a background shape. All has gone very well using TDV except for a three way tandem point - the very last piece of the jigsaw.

The problem is my lack of knowledge and terminology. When I try to follow the excellent Templot video I can sort of understand it until my lack of knowledge takes over. Specifically, I do not know if what I am trying to do is allowed bearing in mind the background shape of the prototype requires two staggered B8 LH switches. These appear to be the best fit. Would this be allowed?

The other area where I am failing is the third crossing and blades which from the video seem to be a user choice and I have not got a clue what would be acceptable here. I am aware of recent discussion on this topic but any further help would be appreciated.

Regards

Les

Hi Les,

There is no intrinsic objection to B-8 + B-8, it depends how far the switches are staggered and how the V-crossings lie for checking.

If you attach your background image file here (not the BGS file), we can better advise.

regards,

Martin.

Many thanks for your prompt reply. I have attached the background scan which I am using. The layout is O gauge, GOG-F.

Hi,

In principle there is no problem, you just have to be careful allowing sufficient spacing as Martin says.

An interesting prototype, which appears to have everything, plenty of photos available too. In fact there is even one on the BBC site (try Googling "Hornsea, Railway"), which I think just about shows the actually 3 way in question.

I note that the period is circa 1910 - unlikely to be REA spec then.... . Might make construction easier though.

Many thanks for your input. Actually, the prototype is of Hornsey MPD in North London. The turnout in question forms part of the entrance to the shed.

Hi Les,

Thanks for attaching your BMP file.

Fitting track to a 25" OS map is one of the trickier tasks in Templot because the scale is really a bit too small to match the rails exactly.

You didn't provide any dimensions, but I believe the 25" map has been scanned at 1440dpi and I used that size:

2_111939_260000000.png2_111939_260000000.png

2_111939_270000001.png2_111939_270000001.png

The best fit I could find was to to take the centre road as the main road on a constant 5754mm radius. The turnouts are then C-10 LH and C-9.5 RH. These sizes put the switch tips and V-crossings on the marked locations. The middle V-crossing came out at 1:7.12 LH. The wing rail on one side needed a bit of adjustment to clear the running rail adequately.

I have attached the BOX and BGS files below. I have not done any partial templates or timbering -- over to you, or some other kind soul on here. :)

The BMP file which you posted was a 1-bit scan, which is a problem in the current TDV update -- you may see it with a solid colour background. I have converted it to 8-bit PNG format, and attached it below. I recommend that you reload that file into your picture shape (it's set to be displayed transparent).

regards,

Martin.

Martin

Many thanks for all your help. I will now endeavour to get the plan completed.
