Using iMac/Parallels/Cannon printer. Calibrated printer as normal and then went to print selection of three rows of A4 pages. Printer made three print jobs (one for each row). First job (row) printed ok then second and third came up with postscript errors. Tried again same errors. Only able to print in black and white.

Workaround....exported whole layout to PDF in A4 pages and then selected pages in PDF to print using the iMac (not Parallels). No problems and even in colour!

Conclusion....is it necessary to calibrate the printer and print normally or can all the layout be printed from PDF files without printer calibration?

If this is so then I would always use PDF files in future. (also easier to check the results of one's labours!).

Are you using the Mac printer driver or the Windows printer driver? Templot is written for Windows, so it works properly only with a Windows printer driver.

Are you using the driver which came with the printer? Or a default driver from the OS disk? Often there is a later driver available on the printer's web site with improved functions and bug-fixes.

It's your choice. Printing via PDF gives you greater flexibility to print the pages how and when you wish, using a variety of PDF Reader programs, on different computers and printers. You may for example have a friend with a larger or better printer who can print the templates for you. A3 pages are much more convenient than A4 if you are printing a large layout.

Note that if you use Adobe Reader you are limited to a maximum page size of about 150", with no meaningful error message for larger pages, it just fails to display. It's important to know this if you are creating pages for roll-paper printing at a poster printing shop. Most such places do use Adobe software, so keep your page size within the limit.

These other free PDF Readers do not have such a limit. They must have a limit of some sort, but I have not discovered it:

Nitro PDF Reader
Foxit PDF Reader
PDF-XChange Viewer

Templot will warn you if it thinks the page is too large:

I say "if it thinks" because as far as I can find the limit isn't documented anywhere, and seems to vary with different versions of Adobe Reader.

The downside of using the PDF option is that you can't do a printer calibration, because the created file may end up being printed on a wide variety of printers. If the results are not accurate (measure the grid lines carefully) there is some control by changing the print scaling setting in the PDF reader program, but the control may not be fine enough.

You can of course change the output scaling in Templot before creating the file -- output > enlarge/reduce size for print and PDF > set any % ... menu item. If you do that I recommend that you include the percent figure in the PDF file name. Otherwise you may forget some time later that it is not 100% when printing it on a new printer or sharing the file with others. :)

regards,

Martin.

As usual, Martin, you are a font of information!

I have deleted and then re-installed my printer and now it prints in colour but it seems only one row and then stops. I notice that the printing does not show in the printer dialog and I could only stop by turning the printer off! Esc etc did not work! I will probably only load one row at a time and print that way.

The re-calibration came up with a head-factor 100.07% and roller-factor of 99.67% which is probably good enough for PDF!

I did not realise that PDF had a limitation of about 12ft, so as my new Scaleseven layout is 20ft I had better make two or more files.

Thanks

Michael

Just to clarify, the limit is for a single page i.e. on roll-paper, and only if you use Adobe Reader.

If you are printing A4 pages, the limit is Templot's normal limit for a single print run of 33 pages long x 26 pages wide. That's more than 20ft long for A4 pages. :)

This 33 x 26 pages limit applies both to printing and PDF files.

If your layout is longer than that, use the multiple print run functions.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks again, Martin.

I am trying to sort out a problem with 'too clever' software! When Parallels starts it loads the wrong driver for the printer (HP not Cannon) so I have to reset it each time!

regards

Michael.

Had the same error message and so searched this group and came up with this thread which has solved my problem!

By the way, with your latest software my printer now gives a calibration of 100% both ways!

Michael.
