Dear all,

There are now over 20,000 messages on this forum. 8,000 on the old Templot email group for the years from 2000 to 2007, and another 12,000 since then on Templot Club.

They contain a mass of useful material, but it can sometimes be difficult to find. I want to include all the useful stuff in the A-Z Index at http://templot.com/companion

But first of all, I have to find it. :)

That's where you come in.

Les G wrote:
The first, and most pressing need, is to index the wisdom of the forum replies which are available but effectively concealed in volume of material.

Perhaps it is timely to marshal the goodwill and talent of Templot users to deal with the first need? One way to do this would be to form a squad of volunteers to trawl the threads and identify essential texts.
Thanks Les. A good idea. :thumb:

So here in this topic is somewhere to post your findings. If you come across something which you think should be included, please post a link to it here. Just the link and a brief description is enough for me to find it, and it doesn't matter if it repeats someone else's suggestion, I can easily eliminate any duplications.

If you can find the time to do more than just "come across" things, and go actively hunting, so much the better. All contributions gratefully received. :)

If we can keep this topic for posting links only, and not go rambling off into discussions about them, it will be more useful. I can edit each message to indicate when the linked material has been included in the Index.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thankyou for letting us help; :thumb:

I am in a "recover data" stage following a major system crash, but will start to contribute to the topic from around mid-week.:)

I shall be glad to help as a relatively new user I often have to search out and read-up on various topics. Almost always I find the answer has been provided, often by Martin himself but frequently by others more experienced than me.

Hi Martin and Les

As I said earlier, I have my notes on various Templot 2 functions filed on my computer.  I have posted three examples above.
Are these helpful, or is the mix of notes and links confusing?
If they are helpful I will post the rest of what I have, but I did not want to post two dozen items on this web site if it is only going to cause more work for Martin.
I look forward to hearing from you.
N.B.  If you think theses files are useful, some have a mix of photos, text and web links.  But I know that Martin does not want photos in these postings as they make the files too big and if I ignore this rule and just do copy and paste, the photo just appears as a blank on this form.  it would not make sense if I separated the photos from the related text - so is there any point posting files where there are many photos?
Best wishes
Arthur

Hi All,

LSWArt has misunderstood the method.  It is up to Martin, of course, but what I had in mind was minimum text. Something along the lines of:

" Dummy vehicle function - gallery/2/original/2_241739_180000001.png "

I probably would not have used that particular link to the topic, but the point is that Heading and a link is all that is needed for proposed Index entries. Although, there is nothing wrong with supplying a number of headings or links to help Martin.

Please Note: There is no need for any justification, or discussion on this topic and absolutely no requirement to insert pages of text or quotes which would simply repeat the volume of clutter to be waded through; thus entirely defeating the object of the exercise.

Thanks, LSWArt, for trying to help, but please think it through.

Hi Arthur,

Many thanks for those suggestions -- I will get them included in the Index. :thumb:

But this topic is going to get very confusing and difficult for me to follow if you post the actual content from the messages which you want indexed.

What I had in mind is that you would simply post a link to the message, with a brief description. For example your first suggestion would be simply:
single-blade catch point: message 12792
I can then do the rest. And after it has been indexed I can edit it to read:
single-blade catch point: message 12792
so that everyone knows that it has been dealt with.

You can find the links to each message in blue immediately above the sender's name on the left.

Alternatively, if it is easier, you can simply give me the reference number for the message, like this:
single-blade catch point: 12792
I have now added the reference number in green at the bottom of every message to make this easier, and it is also at the bottom of all emails from Templot Club.

Provided I have a link or reference number I can soon find and index the relevant topic/message(s), and make any amendments needed for Templot2.

By all means post a list of several references in one go, if you wish. This will keep this topic more compact, as I suspect (and hope) it will get quite long.

Thanks again,

Martin.

Hi Arthur,

I have now added this item to the A-Z Index. See:

 http://templot.com/companion/index.html?catch_points.htm

You may need to refresh the left-hand frame in order to see the new entries on the Index and Explore tabs.

On the Explore tab the new entry is: Templot + how to... + create catch points

There are several references on the Index tab.

I have crossed through your message as above to indicate that it has now been indexed.

Many thanks again for the suggestion.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Arthur,

I've decided not to index this because it is has been replaced with the dummy vehicle tool, and I'm no longer confident that the method given is reliable in all conditions. But many thanks for posting it as a suggestion.

Martin.

Now indexed at:

Ideally it needs a lot more explanation and a video showing it in use, but that will have to wait for now.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for that, but I've decided not to index that as it stands. Re-reading that topic I see that I promised an easier way to move the peg around on a background template, and I remember doing some work on that. But for some reason it seems not to have made it into Templot2, so I'm just now looking to see where it got lost. :?  I do have several old development versions of Templot where I have been experimenting with different ideas. It must be in one of those.

I know I'm not supposed to be doing any more coding -- I said as much about 3 new features ago :) -- but I'm going to put this in the next Templot2 update, if only because I said I would.

Which means that topic will become redundant and need a re-write.

It's easy to see how the web site got in such a mess. :)

regards,

Martin.

Hi Trevor,

Many thanks for those. I will get them indexed soon. :thumb:

It doesn't really matter how you post it, provided I have a link or the message number, so that I can find it.

If you like to spend time actively searching that's fine and welcome, but originally I thought only that members would post a link when they stumble across something worth indexing.

regards,

Martin.
