In 1956 I was living in a small town in Central Queensland. The Olympic torch was being relayed from Cairns, in our far north, to Melbourne. The coastal road in those days was quite primitive. Much of it wasn't sealed and the townships were a long way apart. The Olympic Committee persuaded all the small towns to organise runners. The only stipulation then was that youcould run a five minute mile while carrying a two pound weight. There were plenty of volunteers, but Army escorts still had to run with the torch in the more remote places.
There was none of th ehoopla associated with the torch today. It 'ran' day and night. My turn was on a lonely pice of road at about 8 p. m. My dad dropped me off at a marker and he went on to see it out at nearby pub. I was left in the darkness with about 5 milllion mosquitoes. Eventually a car pulled up and some chap confirmed my identity and placed an unlit torch in my hand.. A little later a small procession of vehicles approaced, proceeded by a runner. When he reached me, we placed the torches together, mine ignited and I was ordered to run like H*ll. I An Army truck was only inches behind my heels so I kept up a good pace. Eventually I reached the end of my mile, Passed on the 'flame' and a medallion was thrust into my hand. The convoy disappeared into the darkness leaving me to the mosquitoes. Eventually my dad reappeared and we went home. I guess I did feel a bit like a Greek runner rather than the circus that occurs today.
A went to the Olympic Games and caught up with the Torch in Sydney. I attended a reception, presided over by the Premier of New South Wales who awaited the arrival of the runner. A muscular youth came puffing through the crowd carrying a rather smoky torch. He handed this to the Premier who took it in his left hand and commenced his prepared speech. A few moments later the correct torch appeared. The Premier was holding a jam tin, nailrd to a piece dowel that still had wet paint on it. The flame was a smouldering, kerosene soaked rag. A flunky took the false torch away and the Premier recommenced his speech. The crowd loved it.
