Greetings from a new user.

First, I should explain the layout and what I’m trying to achieve. It’s a late 80’s, early 90’s modern image layout based on the idea of a freight only line that ends with a set of exchange sidings. Freight arriving here will be shunted into smaller length services to be tripped to a business park/trading estate (off layout). Due to major expansion, it was decided to add a small station/halt to service the business park. There is also a siding on the layout which I’ve called Timber, but may well be domestic coal or oil etc.

So the layout comprises the following…

Main arrival road with run round loop and engineers siding.

Three siding roads with kick-back road for Timber/Coal/Oil.

I’ve tried hard to eliminate the parallel tracks to avoid the “Train-set” look; quite tricky on a fairly narrow board.

The line on the Right hand side that extends past the 2880 marker is the sole exit to the fiddle yard (2880 being the length of my scenic boards).

This is my first attempt at a layout plan using Templot. I’m not entirely sure how I got here and no doubt there are many errors that the experts will be able to point out, but it’s along the right lines (excuse the pun).

A few things I have questions about…..

1.       I seem to have an over-laid CCE siding; easy enough to delete, but why did I get two ?

2.       The lower two of the three sidings have been formed of two sections to get the curve I wanted; is this the right way to do it ?

3.       I have put a slight curve on the upper turnout of the crossover to eliminate the parallel road for the run-round loop which I’ve then made a transition curve. Is this acceptable/correct ?

4.       I moved the labels and I can’t get them back. Help !?

So, there we have it. Any advice or criticism welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Wirey,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)
1. I seem to have an over-laid CCE siding; easy enough to delete, but why did I get two ?
I've no idea unless you say what method you used. :) The normal process to create that siding would be to extend the turnout (F4 mouse action) then tools > make split > make separate exit track. Then F6 mouse action to curve it to the required alignment. Then main > store & background (or INSERT key).

2. The lower two of the three sidings have been formed of two sections to get the curve I wanted; is this the right way to do it ?
Yes, you can build up your required alignment using as many templates as you wish. You could probably improve it by using a transition curve between the two ends, and you may then be able to do it with a single template. The prototype doesn't use nice mathematical transition curves in sidings, but the prototype generally has a lot more space and easier radii.

3. I have put a slight curve on the upper turnout of the crossover to eliminate the parallel road for the run-round loop which I’ve then made a transition curve. Is this acceptable/correct ?
Yes, that loop is looking good. The great advantage of Templot is the ability to put gentle curves through your pointwork. That crossover is currently B-6 -- generally for running lines it's better to aim for at least B-7 on running lines if you have room.

4. I moved the labels and I can’t get them back. Help !?
group > group select all templates menu item, then group > restore group name labels menu item.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks for your input. Looks like I'm doing OK.
