Hi Martin,

What happened to the ability to shift a group onto a notch? I (used to) use this all the time.

Simon

That tedious 2-stage process has long since been deprecated in favour of the notch linking functions:

 http://www.templot.com/martweb/gs_geometry.htm#linking

It must be 10 years since I last used that process myself, so I thought it was high time it was removed from the menus to avoid confusion.

If you really do prefer it (anyone else?) I can reinstate it and hide it somewhere in the menus where beginners won't stumble over it. :)

regards,

Martin.

That reflects the fact that I can no longer do it that way!

But having looked at Martin's link, I don't need to.

Will try it tonight, when I get home from work.

Edit: I did try it and liked it in parts. Whilst Martin deprecate it, I generally prefer it my way - the rigmarole required to break the link doesn't seem to offer much by way of an advantage. Yes, I can un-group and then re-group the templates if I need to repeat the process, but that involves me in more clicks. Of course, there may be a quick way to break the link which I have missed - there is so much capability in the programme that it can be easy to do that!

Like Simon, I also make great use of the 'shift a group onto a notch' function.  I don't recognise a tedious two-stage process in this, on the contrary I've always thought this function to be simple, very quick, and intuitive.  The suggested alternative actually seems more cumbersome to me - but then (also like Simon) perhaps I am missing something in the alternative method :(
Regards,
Stuart

Hi Simon

Yes, I can un-group and then re-group the templates if I need to repeat the process, but that involves me in more clicks. That process is made very much easier with the new tagged name labels feature in 2.06b.  That way, there aren't many extra clicks.  I have to say though that the "new" method Martin described is easier, in my opinion, once you've got the hang of it!

Hi Paul,

Agreed it is much easier/simpler than it was, but it still involves me in making extra mouse-clicks which I didn't have to do before.

I can understand Martin wishing to remove features which he thinks are passé, but in this case it turns out that there are at least two people who were perfectly happy with the operation, so it could have been left there.

I tried the "new" method, as I said, and did indeed like the way it did the linking. What I need to know is, how to un-link in a simple way - the "deprecated" method doesn't require that. I suppose what I am looking for is a simple ctrl-<letter> combination to break the link from the notch.

Simon

Simon Dunkley wrote:What I need to know is, how to un-link in a simple way Hi Simon,

Are you not seeing either of these?

( I will change the word "cancel" to "unlink")

or

If you want a keyboard sequence -- ALT, (release it), U, K, using the accelerator keys on the menus. I will try to find an ordinary shortcut for this, but there aren't many spare. Something else may have to lose its shortcut.

I will reinstate the "shift group onto notch" function later tonight. :)

regards,

Martin.

I am, now that I know what to look for and where to look!

But in order to do this, I had to revisit the link you provided me above, to remind myself of the "new" way of doing things. I can see who it is useful, but I am happy with the way I was doing it - it often sits more easily with what I am doing at a particular time.

I will reinstate the "shift group onto notch" function later tonight. :) Thank you: much appreciated!

None of this is a criticism: in fact, it is a consequence of Template being able to do so many things. I did look on the group menu, but immediately went lower down the list...
