I like the new ballast shoulder and cess features. However the default trackbed width of 105mm seems a bit excessive for the width across the ballast shoulders. It would seem more likely if the cess was intended to be within the trackbed width.

I stand to be corrected!

Hi John,

It is not across the ballast shoulders -- it is the underlying formation width between the cess drains, which defaults to the usual dimension of 15ft for single track. The ballast edge usually extends to the edge of the formation, or it may be a bit narrower.

Since the prototype varies so much, it is for the user to set the required dimensions. If you want the line to mark the ballast shoulder top, you must set the width accordingly. This dimension can be specific to each template.

regards,

Martin.

p.s. John.

Here's a sketch cross-section showing the trackbed width and cess:

The underlying formation is prepared with a top slope of 1:20 for drainage into the cess, to typically 15ft trackbed width. The ballast is then spread on top of that.
