Hello, I am to make a small P4 layout/diorama for a friend to display his 1980's diesel locos on. I have done a very simple Templot design for the layout and am going to use Peco components a I have stocks of plastic sleepers, timbers and rail. I also have the normal Peco Pandrol fixings and the slide rail parts that they still produce. This is of course for flat bottom rail. What do I do about fixings for the check rails/crossings/wing rails ? Only having made BH track before I am at a loss to know how to proceed on this. Help appreciated. Rob |

Rob Manchester wrote: Hello, Hi Rob Somewhere in the prototype pics I think are some photo's of a F/B turnout showing the components which I took at Merehead quarry several years ago. I don't have the time at the minute to look back at my previous post's. If you've not replied by the time I get chance to get back on line and have a look I will do so then poss tomorrow or Thursday. Hope this might be a bit of help. Cheers Phil |

Hello Phil, Thank you for taking the time to direct me to your excellent photos. They made me realise that all these years modelling BH track had caused me to forget some of the 'features' of FB P&C work. When I asked the question about rail fixings for crossings/wing/checks I should maybe have looked at some photos first to refresh my memory of what the real thing looks like. I will have to do some fiddling about with FB rail and the Peco baseplates and see what can be made for crossings/wing/checks. Looking in my copy of British Railway Track at the FB sections ( which I never did before ! ) showed me some quite interesting things. I hadn't considered that the check rails would need the rail bottom filing to fit close enough to the stock rail even for my overscale 1mm gaps. Check rails seem to be positioned at the required distance from the stock rail by blocks bolted through the two rail sections with inner baseplates just providing extra security. It may be possible to fix the common crossing unitin a similar way too. Just hope the wheel flanges aren't too deep......... Any further insights most welcome. Rob |
