First, thanks for this marvellous piece of software. I'm fitting an 0 gauge layout around a room and have a rather complicated baseboard shape which I need to put in as a background shape. I've drawn it as a jpeg which I attach. The dimensions overall are 36400mm x 42500mm. How do I put it in as a background shape to the right size?undefinedundefinedundefinedundefined

Steve,

That looks like big layout, but are you serious that the room is 36.4 by 42.5 metres?

Hi Stevo,

I think you have an extra zero in those dimensions, unless that's a barn door at top right. :)

However, that doesn't change the method.

It would be much better to draw your room directly in Templot using the background shapes functions, but you can use your existing image if you prefer, like this:

This is for Templot2. Please do not try to follow this if you are still using an earlier version of Templot.

First of all, you must know where the image file is saved on your computer and how to navigate to it in a Windows file dialog. I'm sorry if that sounds a bit basic, but I've discovered that many users can't manage that much, relying always on the Windows defaults. I'm afraid I can't provide a Windows primer as part of the Templot tutorials, we have to assume a base starting point somewhere.

1. Click the main > background shapes menu item or press CTRL+S.

A background image is called a picture shape. It is comprised of two components:

a container rectangle, having specified overall dimensions and a specified position on the trackpad, and

a raster (bitmap) image which is stretched to fit inside it. This is loaded from an image file, from a scanner or camera or wherever.

It's important to understand these two separate components, because the container rectangle may sometimes appear empty, and it is possible to change the image which it contains without changing its size or position.

After clicking the background shapes menu item, this dialog will appear:

2. To add a new shape, first click the new shape tab.

3. Enter a name for the shape, which will appear in the list of shapes. This screenshot was for a map, but yours will probably be "room outline" or similar.

4. Click the option for the type of shape, in this case a picture shape.

5. Choose whether you want to enter the dimensions for this shape, or have it placed at locations which you previously clicked on the trackpad. Usually for a picture shape you want to enter dimensions.

6. Click the add shape button.

7. This dialog appears. For your room plan click the bottom green bar for drawing, photograph or other picture .

8. The data-entry dialog appears. I entered your figure for the width, but I think you need to delete one of those zeroes. :)

9. The usual Windows file dialog will then appear, so you can select your required image file.

After which, if you zoom out you should see:

10. For this I ticked the transparent option on the background shapes dialog, although on some systems this may restrict the range of zooming. As you can see, I removed the extra zero, making this 3640mm wide.

11. Click the save all as... button on the background shapes dialog, to save a BGS file for this picture shape.

This question crops up often. In the next program update I have added a new menu item -- this is just a duplicate form of words on the menu, the functionality is not changed:

2_131128_200000000.png2_131128_200000000.png

which leads to:

2_131128_200000001.png2_131128_200000001.png

In the next update. :)

regards,

Martin.

Thanks - I can't convert mm to cm to m. We didn't have this trouble with feet and inches! I was trying to input something the size of Pete Waterman's layout!

Martin - and others - thanks very much. The baseboards are in place. Now for the interesting bit...
