I'm building an 0 gauge LMS ex Midland country station, 1930s, with a passing loop on a single track line. There is a platform on one track only, a bit like Highley on the SVR. Two questions: as there's a passenger service that must use the platform road in either direction, would both roads be signalled bi-directionally? Would there be trap points at the ends of the passing loop?

Stevo,

The approach to the passing loop from both ends would have a signal, with two arms (possibly on separate dolls), with the main route being on a higher doll, whilst that signalling the route into the platform on a lower doll. Some companies placed both arms on one post whereby the main route would be indicated by the upper arm.

As for trap points, prototypically yes, however, this was not always the case. I know that platform 4 at Bury Bolton St. didn't have a trap point at the north end, whereas the south end had a stabling siding for 2 car sets. This platform was bi-directional with services from Holcombe Brook terminating there, and electric services from Manchester also terminating there (and P1).

Hope this helps.

My guess, and it is a guess, is that it would depend on whether the loop line is regarded as simply a loop line i.e. if its only purpose is to allow a goods train to pass a passenger train, or vice versa, then trap points may not be necessary.

Ministry of Transport Requirements (1950) state that .....in the absence of other acceptable arrangements....trap points are required if the Stop signal controlling the entry to the loop is not at an adequate distance from the fouling point at the exit, or where the line is worked on any non token method. So place your signals far enough away and you won't need any trap points,  Place them close and with your bidirectional working you will need them on both lines. If the siganls on both approaches are too close you will need four trap points which should make a nice talking point!

Rules in the 1930s were probably much the same.

Thank you all for your interesting replies. I was hoping to avoid four catch points, I must admit! I think I'll get away without them.

Hi All,
Watching this thread, I have an 0-Gauge railway loosely based on LNER main line (with an ECML flavour) in the late 30s. I have a main 5 platform through station with one being the bay road. Would this require a trap point?

I also have a small country style through station on the main line (outside in the garden section) also with a bay road on the up line and a secondary platfrom opposite on the down line (island platform between the down main line and the secondary line), so effectively 4 platforms. There is also a goods loop accessed at both ends from the secondary down line.
Whilst I know that the goods loop would require a trap point what would the others require?
Regards,

GeoffB
