I suppose it was bound to happen to someone and I'm probably not the first...

Just had a major, major computer crash  and lost everything I had and, being a complacent sort of old s*d - no backups. Had to re-install windows 7 and then set about putting all I had saved (mainly images and video on memory cards) back. It was only then I realised all my Templot track info for Quernaby Junction was in the ether somewhere.

Has anyone even a crumb of help they can offer - pleeease?

Got half my track built and looks like I might have to start all over again.... I know, it serves me right

Hi Mike,

There are several options when re-installing Windows, and not all of them involve completely reformatting the drive. Presumably you have checked that there is nothing remaining at C:\TEMPLOT_DEV\ ?

A specialist firm may still be able to retrieve your data from the drive, but at great cost.

For the future there is an easy way to keep backups of your Templot files, see:

Sorry I can't be much more help. :(

Hi Mike

That's never good news.  When you re-installed Windows, did you actually reformat the drive?  If not, your data will still be there.  Otherwise, it's as Martin suggested - ££££s to a data recovery company, but the catch is that your new install and copying data off memory cards will have overwritten previous data.

Martin has already offered space for backup, but you might also consider Microsoft's SkyDrive for important stuff (and I include Templot work in that).  This program keeps a real-time mirror of any files within the SkyDrive folder on the cloud without you having to do anything.  I've actually installed Templot in the SkyDrive folder where it's quite happy.  It also costs nothing!

Cheers

There are lots of data recovery programmes on the web (search under data or disc recovery software - e.g. http://www.recovermyfiles.com/
which claims:
>
A have used data recovery software (although I had not reformatted the hard drive) and this recovered all my data, but the company I used (Migo) is no longer trading, so it would mean searching on the web to see what other users recommend.
However, if you intend to do this, do not load any more software on to your computer, of use it more than you have to, as you will be constantly over-writing the existing data and probably reducing the amount of data you may be able to recover.
Very best of luck. Arthur

Sorry - I always forget that I cannot use arrows around quotes. The missing text is
.... which claims:
Recover My Files data recovery software recovers deleted files emptied from the Windows Recycle Bin, lost due to the format or re-install of a hard drive, or removed by a virus, Trojan infection, unexpected system shutdown or software failure.

Hi Arthur,

Highlight the text you wish to quote, and then click the quote.gifquote.gif button above the text area.

Alternatively, enclose the text in [quote] ... ... ... [/quote] tags.

Hello,
It would be possible to use a live linux cd to read the contents of a failed windows system hard drive and recover any files/data on said drive. However once a fresh windows install has been undertaken any previous information is likely to have been over written/lost due to formatting being the normal procedure prior to a fresh install of the windows operating system.

Hi Mike

Runtime Software make an excellent piece of file recovery software called GetDataBack.  It's quite expensive to buy but you could have a go at the free trial at:

http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm

to see if your files are still there (make sure you get the version for NTFS, not FAT).

It's a bit complicated at first view so read the instructions carefully and it would be best if you could install it to a drive other than the one that crashed (have a look at the information about running it from a external drive or bootable CD).  If the files are still there, copy them to a different drive also.

Good luck

John

I use Clonezilla on a weekly basis: see http://clonezilla.org/

It runs as Linux on a CD ROM, and makes a total disk image on another drive, which can be restored at need. Very easy to use, but takes a couple of hours.

Thank you guys for all your help and suggestions, but.. it appears someone up there may have been looking very, very kindly upon me... and all may not be lost.

May lad (god bless him) knowing what a computer numpty I am was checking out my newish 'puter and, realising I had not set up back-up, did so. He did a back-up onto 5 optical discs so my files should be in there somewhere - hopefully.

However, he's away working for a few months and I put the discs in the DVD drive but cannot get a list of files - it just wants to restore everything. This is what I'm getting;-

Screenshot.jpgScreenshot.jpg
The files appear to be in that marked, 'MIKE-VAIO' but how do I read them?
Once I can read them, can I drag and drop into my re-installed TEMPLOT files?

Thanks again for all your help.

Mike

Sounds like you might owe him a beer or two!
I would guess that he used the Windows 'Backup and Restore' function. In Windows 7 you can get there by clicking on the System Tray 'Action Centre' flag icon or via the Control Panel options list.
If you use the same utility to restore your files, you should get the option to choose which files or folders that you want to restore. If the backup is on 5 discs, expect to do a bit of disk swapping while the Restore program searches for and builds a list of backed-up folders and files for you to choose from.
It might be easier to restore the whole Templot or Templot_Dev folder (perhaps under a different folder name) to allow you to drag and drop the files that you want at your leisure.

I'm sure that once you have everything sorted out you will take regular back ups. Do make sure that you keep them safe and under your own control. A portable hard disc kept in the garage or somewhere well away from the computer is ideal.

There are also many cloud options where your data is held "safe" on some vast storage system somewhere. I am not convinced about the safety of such systems and would rather keep data strictly under my own control. Remember Fotopic that collapsed? I had pictures there, but only as copies. That is very much a personal decision, but it would be interesting to hear other people's views.

Hi Geoff
but it would be interesting to hear other people's views.
I take the view that cloud storage should be used in conjunction with a proper backup plan.  SkyDrive, which I mentioned earlier, is great and I have used it as a backup, but ultimately it's outside of my control.  Off-site external hard drives are the way to go!  I also have some concerns about data security of cloud storage, so I wouldn't have bank account details, for instance, on there.

Backup routines and the script I use have been discussed here, but the gist is that I take monthly incremental backups on top of occasional (4-6 monthly) full backups to external hard drives, one of which is kept 50 miles away from home.  As with any backup, it's usefulness depends on ensuring that the data you want to keep is actually backed up.  Guess how I discovered that one... :(

Cheers

Well after what seems like years rather than a couple of months we have finally given up on trying to recover anything from the backup discs. The only thing positive we have managed is a trackpad screen shot of the intended final layout.

So next question is are trackpad screen shots a pre determined scale? to enable me to use a copy as a base drawing on which to hopefully reload my trackwork.

Hi Mike,

Sorry to hear you have lost your files.

The scale of a trackpad screenshot depends on the zoom level which you were using when you made it.

However, it probably includes the grid lines.

After loading it as a background picture shape, set the grid in front of it. First move it until the grid origin lines coincide, and then scale it by mouse action until all the grid lines coincide -- action > mouse actions: shapes > shift shape and scale shape mouse actions.

To avoid confusion, it would be a good idea to use a different colour scheme for the trackpad from the colour scheme in the screenshot.

regards,

Martin.
