An existing user is having trouble updating to the latest Templot version. He writes:My pc has been hit by some 'orrible virus so at present my only means of operating is to use my wife's guest application. I've managed to download the latest version but am unable to save/log out. Unfortunately, I cannot make head nor tail of this. Even if I could, I don't really have the knowledge or resources to provide a Windows help line. One reason for making Templot free is so that I don't have to deal with emails like this. Nevertheless I would like to help if I can. Can anyone with Windows troubleshooting experience provide a reply which I can send him? Thanks. Martin. |

Martin, Knowing which version of Windows he is using first will help, but first course of action after running a security scan would be to roll back his PC to an earlier date. For Windows 7: Start>Control Panel>System and Security>Action Centre>Restore your computer to an earlier time. Once in there, click on "Open system restore". This will open another window, "Restore system files and settings" - click the Next box at the bottom. This opens a further window with a drop down list of restore point dates. If there are only a couple, tick the box bottom left to open more restore points. Your user should be able to roll the machine back to a point before the virus. This should fix the problem and allow him to re-install Templot 2. Ian |

Hi Martin I'm not sure you should have to deal with that type of email whether Templot is free or not! You have enough on your plate supporting Templot without supporting Windows as well - MS have a far bigger budget for that!! Maybe the best solution is to ask him to post his question on the Off Track forum, so that others can extract more meaningful information in order to be able to help. Cheers |

First time I've used this for a long time and not sure if I'm in the right place, so apologies if not. My problem is that on trying to update to the latest version today I got the following message:- "Windows cannot access the specified path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item" What does it mean and what to do. I didn't have any trouble updating last time. Using windows 8 and trend micro anti virus. Help please!! Thank you John schofield |

I was able to download, install and start Templot in under sixty seconds... So it looks like the new upgrade is perfectly happy with W8. Therefore can you give us more details to be able to help? At exactly what point in the download/install/running process did you have this error message? Cheers Paul Willis |

Hi, thanks for your reply I got the message as soon as I double clicked the downloaded file or least a soon as it had thought about it for 20 seconds of so! John |

Hi John"Windows cannot access the specified path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item" I have a Win8 laptop at home, and I vaguely recall it being unhappy about sticking things in the root of the C drive, i.e., C:\TEMPLOT2\ I'm not able to check that right now, and in any case I've probably changed security settings, but it might at least give you something to look into! It's also possible your antivirus software is preventing access to C - you wouldn't normally install or store anything there, and Templot is the only application I'm aware of that does still install to the root of C: Templot will run quite happily anywhere except Windows' system folders so I've installed it elsewhere (within my SkyDrive folder, as it happens). Cheers |

John Schofield wrote: Hi, A suggestion: - navigate (press [Windows] + [E]) to the folder with the downloaded file in it. I use the pre-defined Downloads folder for all of my files like this. - click once on the "templot_208b_setup.exe" file to highlight it - right-click it and select "Run as administrator". This is the third option down for me. - see if that makes a difference. I hope that the attached screenshot shows what I mean. Otherwise you have one of my holiday photos... Cheers Paul |

John Schofield wrote: Thanks PaulI'm just happy that I've been able to help. I've learned so much from the Templot Forum over the years that it's nice to be able to repay just a small part of the debt. And Martin also had the answer anyway, of course ;-) Cheers Paul |
