On the Rother Valley Railway at Robertsbridge they've just completed a new curved turnout which is VERY long; according to the track plan in the station building, it's 146m outside radius and 142m inside radius. The rails are marked as H for the switch rails and a 1 in 20 crossing! When I manage to download the photos from my phone [url=mailto:I'@ll]I'll[/url] post them on here. Quite why they made it so long is beyond me, but I gather the track was designed by London Underground staff. Some of the concrete sleepers in the area are s/h from LUL, so still have the mountings for 3rd and 4th rail! The RVR is still officially a building site at the moment, so please don't go wandering down there to look. There is a grand opening this weekend (21st and 22nd September 2013) with trains running the length of the line to Eastbridge Street, about 500m. I got my pictures from being officially on site, learning the layout as a shunter! |

This uses an H switch and 1 in 20 crossing, making a very long turnout indeed. There's a track diagram in Robertsbridge (RVR) station building with all the radii on it! |

Hi Roy, Many thanks for the pics. It's quite unusual to see such a long turnout being installed in bullhead track nowadays. Do you know if it is a new 1:20 crossing, or second-hand recovered from elsewhere? The reason it is so long is because the two radii are so similar -- 142mm / 146mm. That's a difference of only 2.8% so I'm quite surprised it isn't much longer than a 1:20. A quick check suggests such close radii would require about 1:40. Of course no such bullhead crossing is available. An H switch would normally be natural at about 1:28. Perhaps 1:20 was the flattest bullhead crossing available? It appears to be a completely new turnout. The trackwork for Robertsbridge was designed by London Underground staff. Quite why they chose such a long turnout is a mystery! Maybe they had parts left over from another project? |
