Hello,
I would like to master making tandems but I have a problem at the start of the video tutorial.

How do I get from turnouts fully timbered to a pair with timbers missing like those at the beginning of the video please?

If you want to remove all the timbers in a turnout go to 'Real' 'Timbering' 'No timbering'.  If you want to remove some but not all timbers then go to 'Real' 'Shove timbers'.
Hope that helps

Hi Trevor,

1. real > shove timbers..., or SHIFT+F10, or press the COMMA key.

2. the timber numbers will appear, and this dialog:

2_261130_460000000.png2_261130_460000000.png

3. click on the number of the timber which you want to remove (not on the timber itself, click on its number).

4. the timber will turn red.

5. press letter O on the keyboard, or click the omit timber button.

6. repeat for the next timber.

(The keyboard method is much faster if you want to remove several timbers.)

If you omit a timber by mistake, click on its number, then press letter M on the keyboard, or click the restore timber button (the numbers of omitted timbers remain visible).

Click the ? help button for lots of information about shoving timbers.

regards,

Martin.

In the tutorial a continue box is present. How do I proceed out of the box above?I have tried Control-F3 blanking length but nothing happens.I seem to be unable to implement the next step as in the tutorial, as there is no continue button

Hi Trevor,

The omit rails dialog is no longer modal, so it is not now necessary to dismiss it with a "continue" button, you can simply leave it there and carry on.

Or drag it out of the way, or click hide, or press the ESC key.

The child dialogs can all be dragged using the top caption bar in the same way as other windows, although it's not obvious because the caption bar is not a different colour in later versions of Windows:

CTRL+F3 should be working, although as you are using Linux there may be a problem with the shortcut key. Try pressing 3 instead on the main keyboard, or clicking the relevant action > control/geometry > menu item.

However, you don't need it because you can now click the do > blank up to V-crossing menu item instead.

Not for the first time of saying so, I'm really very sorry that the tandem video is so out of date. I must try to find the time to make a new one soon. If anyone can tell me how to make a smooth-running screen video without spending the hours and hours it takes me to edit out all the mouse fumbles and hesitations, I would be very grateful. I would like to add a voice-over commentary, but that can't be done until all the video editing is finished. I'm currently using Camtasia. I would prefer to use TurboDemo (which fills in smooth mouse movements between clicks for you) but unfortunately it can't capture the mouse actions because there is no clicking. Jing is ok for short clips, but the tandem video would be too long for Jing and in any event the unedited scruffy video becomes tiring to watch after a few minutes.

In the meantime, here are some links to the original notes for the tandem video. I hesitate to post them for beginners because it is all so out of date, but you may find them useful:

My original notes for the video:

 message 4150

In 2009 John Preston wrote a couple of tandem tutorials:

 john_preston_tandem_part1.pdf

 john_preston_tandem_part2.pdf

(4 pages in each part)

I wrote a quick run-down of the Templot2 changes for tandems here:

 topic 1487 - message 9841

and some more notes about it here:

Martin.

Hello.
" using Linux there may be a problem with the shortcut key. Try pressing 3 instead on the main keyboard"
Just pressing 3 did the trick.
Thanks Martin.

I deleted this post as the issue I had with reading the John Preston pdf's was resolved. It must be a browser issue (Firefox 26.0) as the files opened with a pdf reader after I downloaded them.

Hi Trevor,

Microsoft Word is the worst program on the planet and regularly produces such drivel. However, millions of folks use it, so obviously I am missing something. :?

I have now recreated John's original files as web pages -- you should be able to see these:

http://templot.com/john_preston_old_tandem_tutorials/tandem1.htm

http://templot.com/john_preston_old_tandem_tutorials/tandem2.htm

The pages were produced by Word, so still contain reams of rubbish HTML, and the picture quality is poor, but should at least be readable.

I'm not sure these old tutorials will be much help with Templot2, but better than nothing.

I'm preparing a proper reply to this topic, but I've written so much over and over again about tandems over the years, not all of it still relevant, that it really needs me to do a proper new tutorial + video.

I will be doing that, but it is days or weeks of work, so not something I can write as a quick reply here.

regards,

Martin.

Hello Martin,
Thanks for your help so far.I appreciate it will require more work and time for you to make a new tutorial and video.I think you provide Templot and its users so much time and assistance already without doing new things as well. The tandem is in some sidings so it is not critical to me continuing with my overall plan.Being able to read the pdf's has allowed me to progress a bit further.:thumb:
Thanks.
Trevor.
