I thought this link might be interesting. http://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/dailysvce.htm The 5th picture down shows the interface between the Swanage heritage line and Network Rail. I think it is quite unusual to see two catch points back to back, although presumably used elsewhere in similar situations. I have not posted the photo as not sure what the copyright situation is. Regards, Arthur |

There's a pair of back to back catch points at the end of the ESR where it joins Network Rail, Until a few years ago there was still a pair in the ESR track at the old interface with BR on the Cranmore side of the crossing from the shed to Cranmore West platform. Cheers Phil |

Hi Arthur, Thanks for posting that. It seems strange that they are back-to-back instead of toe-to-toe. It means the controls, ownership and maintenance overlap. Also in the event that one of them is used in anger, the other one gets wrecked. Am I missing something obvious? Martin. |

Hi Martin The ones on the ESR were locked together and it required both tokens to unlock the frame. The BR/NR used to come by road from Westbury and was given to the driver at Whites Crossing the exit junction from Yeomans Quarry ours was walked down from Cranmore West when incoming specials were arriving. Phil O wrote: Hi MartinThey must have upgraded since the early 80's. It used to be two facing single rail trap points (as per catch points) operated by individual levers. They were locked 'open' with padlocks, the BR one's key held by the Senior Railman at Quarry Junction who would give it to the Guard, the other from somewhere on the ESR. We once, very naughtily, propelled a wagon chassis and two ex-Bristol Docks opens (with ballast, no brake and no van) from Torr Works to the ESR and discovered that the BR key was missing, the one issued didn't fit. I trooped down to the ESR office on the platform and was, very grudgingly (I guess money was tight then), allowed to use the phone to get authorization to cut the BR lock off, which we did - replacing it with one of the two spare locks Guards were required to carry. While we were there we did a spot of shunting for the ESR to get the ballast where wanted it. You'd get shot these days doing that sort of stuff :-) Got a bollocking for not having two locks at my next rules review/equipment check though! |
