Hello, I decided i wanted to make a small shelf layout.  I have past experience in model railroading and want to do a small, hand laid track layout.  I'm not much for designing layouts, but where I really shine is in the construction and modeling aspects of model railroading.
I wanted to at least give an honest attempt at learning this program.  I've been at it about a week now and while making some progress, i know I'm no where near completely understanding Templot.  I think this is a great program, especially for free.  While I agree the learning curve is big, I'm hoping it will be worth it to build great track work.
Martin don't take it to heart the negative things people have said about Templot, its a great program that some aren't willing to learn.
Anyway with all of that out of the way lets talk about the layout I am thinking of doing.
http://www.carendt.com/articles/the-highland-terminal/
All of the details on this can be found on that link.  I will be doing this layout in N scale and would like a layout to take up no more then around a 1x3 foot print.  Obviously if you look at my templot plan its 3 inches longer but i can live with that.
I'm sure its not perfect and some of you with more experience could help me out on how to better optimize my plan.  Also, if any of you have a better layout suggestion given my layout space, I'm open to suggestions.  Ideally I am looking for a small switching layout, I have also looked at plans like time saver and switchman's nightmare.
Thanks again

Hi Daniel,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

You need to post the .sk81 image file in addition to the .bgs file. You will find it in the same folder.

Is this intended to be a USA prototype or UK? You have set the gauge to N-NMRA so I assume it is USA. At present you are using UK-style A-6 turnouts, which apart from not being the best size choice for such a cramped plan, are not at all prototypical for a USA-based layout.

There are some USA-style templates with closer timbering (ties) which you can download from:

 topic 1335

I would suggest that the 11ft - #5 turnouts would be a good size to use for your plan.

To convert them to N-NMRA, use the convert group button on the gauge/scale dialog.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Daniel,

No, that will mint new templates, restoring some default UK settings.

Instead, to convert them to N-NMRA, click the convert group button on the gauge/scale dialog. That's at gauge > other gauges... menu item.

The conversion may do some funny tricks, such as the wrong check rail (guard rail) end gaps for machined flares, but it's all easily fixed. :)

regards,

Martin.

Ok, I have used the US templates and redid the layout... what you guys think?   Please remember I'm pretty much clueless at this.  Are all my alignments etc good?

Ok I have updated my track plan.  Made sure all clearances and sidings met the specifications for the planned layout.  Tried to clean it up some and did some work on the timbers.
I know its not an elaborate plan, but its what I'm working on.  Thanks for all the feedback
