Please excuse the very small picture but it's all I have - its a location in the USA

I thought I should probably build a small section of track for my first attempts at track building so why not an Inglenook ( yes sorry nothing new to see here ) I will do it as a UK based location but that looks like an ok layout and slightly different from a bog standard inglenook.

So what size turnouts do you think I should use to represent something like that ? - what would seem reasonable.

I will be building this is 00-SF

Hi Rob,

If in the USA those are very likely to be 11ft straight switches with crossing angles maybe 1:6 or 1:7.

There are some USA-style turnout templates available for download here, including 11ft switches:

 topic 1335

For something similar in UK track I suggest 9ft switches with 1:6 or 1:7, or maybe 1:5 if you are cramped for space. At 1:7 you may prefer a 12ft switch instead.

Those are all loose-heel switches as in the picture. You can adopt the same geometry without actually building them with working loose heels if you don't want to.

In fact in anything other than P4, etc., you can't properly model loose-heel switches because the heel offset is too small to allow for the overscale flangeways. The heel-joint must be moved further along.

If you prefer REA flexible switches, I would suggest A-6 as a suitable size.

To save space in a small yard, set all of the above turnouts to curviform V-crossings.

regards,

Martin.
