I’ve just finished my first Templot layout plan (see attached). I am modelling in O Gauge FS (31.5mm). I have been able to build my first A5 turnout as well using the C&L kit parts and the Templot template. I just used the vee and made the wing rails to match the template.

Now I want to carry on with the rest of the trackwork but I’m having trouble with shoving timbers.

I also need to be able to make sure that my nice new A5 turnout fits into the completed plan (including timber position). Its one of two A5 turnouts that make up the engine release crossover.

I will be using C&L flexi track for the plain track so there will be some gauge widening transition needed as well, but I would like to model the plain track in the correct length sections with dummy fishplates so the sleeper spacing would need to reflect this.

Any helpful suggestions with this would be much appreciated :)

Hi Robin,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

Your plan is looking good. You didn't say what is the actual trouble you are having with shoving timbers? You have already shoved some long timbers for the crossover, so you know how the shove timber functions work.

The settings for rail lengths and sleeper spacings are at real > plain track options > rail lengths and sleeper spacings... menu item. If none of the pre-set options meet your need, you can set up a custom setting -- there is a tutorial example on doing that here:

 http://templot.com/martweb/pdf_files/gwr_track_panels.pdf

To get the rail lengths and sleeper spacings to flow correctly across template boundaries, use the roll rails functions. More about that on this page:

 http://templot.com/martweb/pug_info_2.htm

Scroll down to "new roll rails functions" and click the "info" icon.

Ask again if this isn't answering your question.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks for that quick reply Martin.
Before I have a go with the links you have provided I have another question.
I'm not sure about is just how many 'long' timbers I should use on a crossover, particularly if the adjacent track centres are greater than the minimum. Being used to using proprietary turnouts and flex-track I had to trim off the ends of sleepers/timbers where they overlapped, now though how do I manage where sleepers/timbers overlap each other, and when should the angle change?

Hi Robin,

This varies according to the prototype company and period. For example the GWR tended to use many more long timbers than some other companies, such as the LNER.

Here is part of your plan:

2_031622_290000000.png2_031622_290000000.png

By default Templot uses long timbers as far as the rail joints in the vee rails, and plain sleepers beyond, as you can see here. Typically this results in the longest timber being about 15ft or 16ft long, according to your settings for the length of the vee rails and position of the joints.

But the GWR specified long timbers until the vee spread to the gauge faces reached 3ft (21mm in 7mm/ft scale), which I have shown here using the Templot ruler tool. So for the GWR you would use the shove timber functions to widen the next 3 sleepers to 12" timber width, and lengthen them across both tracks.

For widely spaced crossovers, timbers could be specified up to 30ft long, but they were expensive so how many used depends on the prototype. Generally as few as possible consistent with creating track strong enough in relation to the intended traffic. For example if it is a facing crossover road in a fast running line, there would be far more long timbers than in a trailing crossover providing access to a wayside siding.

Unless you are modelling a specific location and date, and have a detailed survey available, all you can do is put yourself in the position of the permanent-way designer and create the most likely timbering layout typical of your prototype and period.

There is more about this in this topic:
