On the ESR at Merryfield Lane halt the turnout is a 109lb flatbottom turnout and all the other track is bullhead so there are 6 transition fish plates there. There are also numerous plain line lift plates to accommodate the various replacements with different amounts of wear. In several locations due to difficulty in obtaining the correct lift plates, I have cut ordinary plates in half and re-welded them together with the amount of lift incorporated as a temporary measure, I believe one or two are still in service. If I can at some point I will post a close up of a transition fishplate. There are actually three methods used to transition between different rail sections. The well known transition fishplates, a transition weld and the newest method of all, a forged transition rail. Michael |
