To illustrate the perils of taking 25" maps too literally when overlaying templates, here is a 4-way treble turnout at Pemberton, near Wigan. As can be seen, all 3 switches are beyond the platform ramp. (The columns on the right are supporting the footbridge). 2_041637_280000000.jpg And this is what the OS surveyor made of it when he got back to the drawing board: 2_041638_560000000.png It does show that 25" maps are really too small for detailed track planning. Unfortunately in most cases they are all we have -- and much better than nothing of course. regards, Martin. |

Jim Guthrie wrote: What are the rails on the outside of the running rails in the bottom left corner?Hi Jim, They appear to be single-blade catch points, acting as traps. In the case of the leftmost two, it is not clear how they would work with check rails opposite them. Keith Norgrove has made the same point when I posted this pic on RMweb. Unfortunately we can't see the full detail closer to the camera. regards, Martin. |

Another 4-way turnout: 2_050807_420000000.jpg Location unknown, but probably in the same area as they are both from the same book (Hepworth & Lee, Manchester, 1922). In this case a single-sided treble with the main road on the right. Somewhat simpler than the Pemberton one -- in this case the 3rd switch is beyond the first crossing. Thus needing only 5 crossings compared with 6 crossings at Pemberton. And 3 crossings in an ordinary double (tandem) turnout. regards, Martin. |
