I'm just collecting parts to make a series of code 70 turnouts to represent light weight Irish track , these would typically be on timber sleepers I've never built FB turnouts. Are they constructed the same way as BH. Thanks Dave |

Hi there Dave : Can we derive from your post that you have experience at building BH turnouts? If so then, without knowing your BH turnout construction methods, turnouts built with FB rail are essentially the same. Code 70 rail is very flexible and my experience is that you could easily build the turnouts with flexible switch heel joints allowing you to keep power routed through the switch rails without the need for additional jumpers. I don't trust rail joiners. The only issue that you may have to deal with is the extra stiffness in the FB rail section caused by the wider bottom flange compared to BH rail. This issue only really comes up at the heal of the switch rails ... you'll choose flexible or hinged connection points. Hinged switch rails are not an issue other than concerns for power continuity at the break point, whereas flexible heals, while overcoming electrical issues, can be a bit more difficult to wrangle. I have tried a few ways of handlaying turnouts in codes 70, 83 and 100 and my definite preferred method is to build upside-down at the workbench and then transpose the shaped and soldered switch/closure/frog/wingrail components to their ties on the layout. The stock rails are laid last and gauged from the frog and closure rails. To do this, a "reverse image" mirror left/right hand (Ctrl H) template from the Templot design is printed out and the rails installed over that by having bits of wood attached to the template to hold the rails by their heads. Then the lot is soldered together along the exposed rail bases. If you have different methods for building turnouts please let us know, Back to the soldering iron .... Rick |

You may need to reduce the foot of the rail in the area of the wing rails to get the correct gap between them and the "V" and ditto for the check/guard rails. Phil. |

Thanks for that I currently build BH on ply largely using functional chairs , but assembling the "V" , and wing rails on 0.6mm shims, before these are superglued to the plywood and backed with cut " cosmetic " chairs This wont work for FB and Irish FB was laid on a simple soleplate, a type that is not available from the model trade, I am thinking of having some etched IN the meantime I want to trial some FB construction , maybe by simply glueing it to the ply , The alternative being copper clad ( of which I have a lot of historical experience ) My idea with the etched soleplates was to glue them down with high temperature cyano ( 200 degrees ) and then solder the FB rail to the brass soleplate I have some copper clad, so in the mean time , I might experiment with that , But I would prefer ply |
