Received latest version to download this morning, went through normal installation sequence but have now lost the programme with a message stating that I cannot overwrite an existing file. I am using Windows 10, the latest edition of McAfee Internet security, can anyone advise or help. Norman

Hi Norman,

Which file?

Check that it has not been set to read-only. Have you copied any files via a CD?

Where are you installing Templot? Don't use the Windows Program Files folders.

It was tested here on Windows7 and Windows10 without problems. There are no significant changes from the previous version install, did that one go ok?

Try right-clicking on the downloaded file, and then Run As Administrator.

Try switching off your McAfee while installing.

Anyone else having problems?

regards,

Martin.

Thanks for the reports.

It's always a puzzle -- I can guarantee every time I release an update that someone will have trouble, while 99 others have no problems. :?

By mid-day today there had been over 100 downloads.

Just to be clear Norman, did you get that message while installing 215a, or when you ran Templot? If the latter, on startup, or what were you doing at the time?

regards,

Martin.

Running perfectly on my desktop under Win7 with ultra wide monitor
and on my Lenovo Yoga 900 131SK tablet  under Win10.

The size slider is very useful on both these machines.

The make slip function is amazing  :)

Hi Martin,

The message came up at the end of installing 215a, having followed all your instructions through the run don't run section into Wizard, accepting all the conditions and agreements, through next, next to final install, it was then in the final install section that the message came up unable to install, either abort or ignore which you don't recommend so I have just aborted each time. Any advice?

Hi Martin,

Have tried again without any success.
The message reads as follows:
' An error has occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory. MoveFile failed: code 183. Cannot create a file that already exists. Click retry, Ignore to skip (not recommended) or abort.'

All previous version updates installed without a problem on this PC using Windows 10.

Its not letting me download the file for some reason.

Hi Norman,

It's difficult to respond without knowing which file is causing the problem.

A few things to try, in order of increasing desperation:

restart Windows and try again.

make sure neither Templot nor the Templot Video Player are running when installing.

if the problem recurs, click the Ignore/Skip option. Most likely Templot will start up ok and create the missing file. Check that Templot is indeed version 215a.

or

try disabling your AntiVirus while installing. I've done some Googling and this seems the most likely problem.

or

delete the C:\TEMPLOT_DEV\internal\ folder (only that one folder), then try again. The installer will re-create it.

or

rename the C:\TEMPLOT_DEV\ folder as something else, e.g. C:\TEMPLOT_DEV_OLD\ . Then run the installer again to create a new C:\TEMPLOT_DEV\ install. You will need to navigate back to the old folder to load your files in Templot, or you could copy them all to the new  folder.

My money is on the AntiVirus.

Martin.

Martin,

I had the same error message (Win 10 & McAfee) on the second attempt. First attempt failed because it said I had TempIot Companion open. Rebooted tablet, tried again, and it worked.
Make slip great, but text impossibly small to read. Now I know how to fix it.

Andrew.

I had a problem with BitDefender Ransomware protection. It did enable me to allow the installation to continue which it appeared to do OK. The new version appeared to start and run without problems. However, as I am a suspicious old so-and-so, I did a re-install with the Ransomware protection turned off with no problem. I am always concerned that when a third party program interrupts an installation the relevant files may get skipped and ultimate failure will be lurking.

Looking forward to playing with the new slip functionality.

Downloaded and installed perfectly OK running Win 7 Pro.

One little niggle which gets me every time I open Templot, it always defaults to the standard BOXFILE directory on drive C: when saving but I have mine on a different drive. Is there any way to get Templot to default to a different drive/directory?

Hi Martin

No trouble loading on Win 10 pro.

Very pleased that the new slip feature makes a slip almost identical to the ones I already make.

However, the, "Rotate F8", box seems to have disappeared accompanied by the appearance of, "Shift & Join F7/F8".

Can't see how this new box contains F8.

Is it me?

Hi Martin,

Slowly went through your list of tries without any success on any of them.

I have been able to download 215a onto a memory stick and this allows me to open all the saved box and image files, and the desktop icon also reappears.

However when the memory stick is removed the icon goes blank and when clinked on gives this message -' Windows cannot access the specific device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission access the item.'

The same message occurs when I try to import Templot 215a from the memory stick.

Should I download and save all my Box and image files onto a memory stick,  then uninstall Templot 2 completely and start the whole download proceedure again.

Thanks for all your help and advice so far.

Hi Godders,

Click the hollow triangle symbol on the mouse action panel to toggle between F7 and F8:

2_080940_240000000.png2_080940_240000000.png

That isn't a new feature, it has always been there.

Similarly for several other mouse actions, clicking that symbol toggles two related mouse actions, e.g.

in F6, toggle between 1st and 2nd transition radius,

for a transition, toggle between the start and zone length adjustments.

When not doing such pre-defined swaps, it toggles back to the most recent previous mouse action. So for example when adjusting check rails you could toggle to and fro between the length of the check rail and the length of the flared end. The BACKSPACE key does the same thing.

I removed the separate F8 button so that I could find space to include an indication of join snapping in the caption on the F7 button. The toolbar can't be made any longer or it won't fit on 1024 screens.

Be aware that F7 snapping is now on by default if you use that button, but off by default if you press the F7 key to start it. Hold down the SHIFT key to reverse that in each case. More info, see:

Martin.

Hi Norman,

Without having your computer in front of me I'm at a loss to know what to suggest for the best.

What happened when you did this:

      1. Rename the C:\TEMPLOT_DEV\ folder as something else, e.g. C:\TEMPLOT_DEV_OLD\ .

      2. Then run the installer again to create a new C:\TEMPLOT_DEV\ install.

If that didn't work you must have some unusual setting on your computer. What have you changed since installing version 214b?

What were the exact wording of the error message(s) when you did the above?

What happens if you restart Windows in between steps 1. and 2. above?

But none of this should be necessary. Anyone?

Martin.

Hi Judi,

You have what on a different drive?

Templot always defaults to the folder in which it is installed.

The basic rule in Templot is that you should keep the program and its data in the same place.

If you want to keep your .box files and other data on a different drive, put the program there too.

That's easy to do. Just re-run the installer and change the installation folder to:

  K:\RAILWAY_STUFF\TRACK_STUFF\TEMPLOT_STUFF\

or whatever.  :)

But make sure the entire path does not contain any spaces.

Remember to add that folder to your backup set. The program is smaller than its data, so including the program in the backup won't make any significant difference.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks Martin, that's what I'd missed. I have been allowing Templot to install itself on my C: drive which is an SSD but have all my documents on a twin HD configured as a Mirror RAID. It's there as E:\TEMPLOT_DEV so I'll reinstall the program there as you recommend and realign my short-cuts accordingly.

Aargh - what happened to the Rotate button at the top of the screen, please. It's gone missing!

Also, is it possible to suppress the warning message we now get every time we try to draw a parallel track. Maybe a tick box on its first appearance, like on other warnings?

Many thanks.

The STOP box on every command I find really annoying, it takes up rather a lot of screen space. The automatic slip construction is brilliant.

Hi Keith,

It is very handy on a small tablet touch screen.

You can make it smaller or non-existent by dragging the bottom edge of the mouse action panel upwards.

Initially I thought the same as Keith, but Martin is quite right about the effect of re-sizing the mouse action window, which 'remembers' the last sizing of the 'STOP' button whenever it is displayed.  Does it remember that setting from session to session?

Hi John,

At present, no.

In the next 215b update it will be in the saved program preferences if you use them.

However, it is likely to get borked if you do a program size change on the slider between saving the preferences and reloading them.

I will add an option somewhere to hide/show the STOP button entirely.

Martin.

Hi Andrew, Keith,

An automated tandem is going to have me scratching my head for weeks/months, and I'm not going to even look at it for a while. It is likely to be limited to a few common size combinations.

An automated outside slip may be more feasible, at least for regular diamonds.

But I really must now spend more time on the Templot Companion, if I can drag myself away from the program coding to get on with it. :(

Martin.

Hi Martin

A few weeks ago, pre version 215a auto slip feature, I created a station throat, as in the attached .box file.

Post 215a I thought it would be interesting to compare my original throat with a similar auto slip version.

I created the new version and overlaid it on the original, it was a pretty good fit, except, the auto slip roads are shorter than my manually created slip roads. Therefore the point blades end up on a different timber.

Undeterred I again created the slip roads manually over the auto creation and I still got longer slip roads. I cannot see a reason for this having followed the manual creation procedure to the letter or to be more accurate the single slip video.

Please help me understand where I have gone wrong.

cheers

Godders

Hello Martin
Yes I hear that you're being pulled all over the place and that your real love is the programming side. Fighting that is the almost equally strong desire to document it all so that everybody can use or look up how to use Templot with ease.

I mentioned Three Ways purely selfishly as its the last common formation that has beaten me (Stephen from Borg Rail did both of mine  for me) and I'd really like to know how he did it. So conversely in fact following the route of concentrating on the Companion would actually suit me and I'd think many of us "loyal subjects " very well!

Thanks again for your apparently tireless enthusiasm in both programming Templot and replying to all our posts here and of course for broadening our horizons with both cricket and porridge.

Kind regards
Andrew

Hi Godders,

You haven't gone wrong. What you may have missed is this message:

 topic 3067 - message 21817

Which illustrates why I really must spend more time on the docs.

For a double-slip flatter than 1:6.5, there is an option to move the switch tips one timber space further back away from the V-crossing:

2_271320_590000000.png2_271320_590000000.png

This provides some increased model clearance for the opened blades and the need to maintain insulation between them, and corresponds to some prototype practice. Also more choice in deciding exactly where to make the rail gap in front of them. Prototypes vary in the position of that rail joint -- on the GWR the wing rail and switch stock rail are in one piece. That's not an option on a 2-rail model.

By default this increased double-slip clearance is on for 00/EM etc, but off for P4/S7 etc. This can be changed as required. It does of course reduce the slip road radius, which is why it applies only above 1:6.5.

Note that this applies only to double-slips.

Here is the tip clearance help:

2_100640_250000000.png2_100640_250000000.png

If you turn this off, you should find that the auto-generated double-slips match your own very closely.

But you may then have more trouble building them. Generally for EM and 4-SF I suggest a switch opening of 1.75mm (using a 20p coin as a gauge). If your interlocking requires both switch blades to be open at the same time you may find that quite tricky to achieve, bearing in mind that you must maintain electrical insulation between them.

In many cases the interlocking is such that both switches move in unison, which makes life a bit easier.

Unfortunately Templot's ability at telepathy to know what the user wants to do is nil. Hence the need for so many option settings -- and the docs to explain them all. Sorry that last bit is so inadequate.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Managed to solve problem with help from younger members of the family!
It seems that my Templot programme had so many layers from previous updates it just confused itself.
So we saved all the files, and uninstalled the old programme, then installed the new 215a programme, reinstated the files, and now it works perfectly.  Which is basically as you mentioned below.

Many thanks, Norman

Hi Martin,

Just to let you know that I run Templot on Linux Ubuntu v 16.04 under Wine. The update ran perfectly. Haven't had a chance to test the new features yet, but will let you know if I encounter any issues.

Regards

Dave

Hi Martin

I like the new dialogue box that appears when creating double track on MS or TS. Seeing the track separation is quite useful as is the reminder about increasing the separation on bends. I don't think though you will have intended to be displaying the "cancel crossover" message for this action. I guess that is a carry over from your new make crossover dialogue box that is equally appreciated for the track separation info.

Well done on all your efforts with the recent updates. Much appreciated

Fraser

Thanks Fraser.

I spotted and fixed that soon after releasing 215a. It doesn't matter how much testing I do, there is always something which jumps off the screen 5 minutes after it is too late. :?

I'm hoping to have 215b ready later today. The main change is the option to use the NLS "Find by place" individual map sheets, which cover a much wider range of locations and dates than the georeferenced maps.

regards,

Martin.
