Hi all,

I warn you now that I'm fishing, probably on a hiding to nowhere, for information on a dimly recalled layout.

Some time in the 60's in one of the railway modeller's magazines (which one I can't recall) there was an article about a large permanent club layout in the order of 60 x 25 ft and possibly larger. It had something for everyone, mainline terminus, branch lines, main track and plenty of opportunity for all aspects of the railway modellers' art. At the time I 'drooled' at the thought of being able to visit. Not possible unfortunately.

I think the club was based in Kings Lynn - UK , though I can't be certain. Whether it was in that article or a later one the club was about to lose their accommodation. Whether the club still exists or any of the layout was saved; I don't know. Frankly I doubt it.

Does anyone have an idea of which club layout I'm remembering and, if so, any information about it?

regards

Dave

Hi Martin,

Sadly no. I'm certain that the layout I remember was OO gauge. This was approximately 50 years ago.

This site might help:
http://www.magazineexchange.co.uk/model-railway/

Select your magazine and it has pics of the magazine cover for most years. Click on a cover and you sometimes have the magazine contents index as well. Unfortunately you can't get larger pics of the cover.

Nearest I can remember was a club layout based on one of CJF's plans which appeared in Plans for Larger Layouts. It included a main line station with both a through and a terminal section. The mainline was a sort of folded-over dumbell arrangement. Included a suburban station, extensive goods yard, carriage sidings. Not sure about branch line.

There was another but that was definitely an exhibition layout.

The Gainsborough layout has been going since 1953. Not a million miles from Kings Lynn.

The plan I was thinking of appeared in the 1st edition of Plans for Larger Layouts. I lent this to someone and it never came back :-( I have the 2nd edition but it's not in that.

Would suit a club layout because it was one of CJF's less compressed designs, could easily be expanded to make use of a larger area, and the folded dumbell arrangement meant that all bits were fairly easily accessed.

The other layout I was thinking of was the Wadmes Lines, published in the August 1958 RM.

Guys,

Don't bust a gut about this. I know it was in East Anglia, Kings Lynn rang a bell but I can't be certain. However if I do see the layout/article I will know it.

ciao

You could try RMweb. Quite good at sorting out this sort of information.

Dave,
I have copies of the 1960s Rly Mod, Model Rly Const and Model Rly News.  If you are passing by you are welcome to have a look through them to find the relevant issue.

John,

Whilst I'd love a trip to France again, it isn't an option for me at the moment. Thank you for the offer.

Nigel,

I'm not a member of RMWeb but for this fishing expedition you may be right. Perhaps I should join.

Dave

Rodney,

Thank you - that's the one! Bury St Edmunds not Kings Lynn, only 40 miles out.

Does anyone know what happened to it?

Dave

cheers,
