Hello. I am a new member having difficulty constructing a ladder crossing with a single slip almost identical to that demonstrated in the video except my slip goes from the main into a siding.

By following the video instructions I have built the diamond crossing and prepared the turnout by removing the timbering and centre lines. Because my slip goes from main to siding I pegged the turnout to the first half diamond at MCP and it appears to fit exactly.

Using Tools – make slip I see the latest version differs from the video. I am offered a choice and chose single slip same hand. The complete slip is constructed in one go rather than the 2 steps in the video – very good.

Now my problem. I seem to have the slip superimposed on the diamond crossing. If I wipe the half diamonds I get a lovely set of rails but no timbers. What am I doing wrong?

A second problem is the rails of the first half diamond do not quite align with the original turnout rails by approx a rail width.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Regards

Hi Charles,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

Which video were you following? Recent new features have made a lot of the old stuff out-of-date or just plain wrong. I'm sorry about that. I'm in the process of trying to get it all updated.

To get what you want, don't create the diamond-crossing. Start with the turnout only, and click this menu item:

Ask again if you get stuck.

cheers,

Martin.

Hello Martin. I did as you said and the result is stunning. Unfortunately using the single slip crossover did not give a slip to the siding so I used the double slip command and wiped the slip road and switches not needed. Is this legitimate?
Many thanks
Charles

Hi Charles,

Anything is legitimate on your own railway. :)

However, that will have left unwanted extended timbers on one side, and depending on the crossing angle the check rails may have been shortened unnecessarily.

Sorry I didn't read your first message properly. A slip road on the outside of a ladder is not so common on the prototype because it generally means a facing switch in the running line. But maybe I need to add that option anyway.

To get what you wanted, do this:

1. start with the turnout.

2. click tools > make ordinary crossover menu item.

3. click template > convert turnout to half-diamond menu item.

4. click tools > make slip > make single slip - opposite hand menu item.

This works for a straight or curved tracks.

cheers,

Martin.

p.s. Charles,

I suggest changing the timbering on the turnout to equalized incremental if not already. This is often done where turnouts connect to diamond-crossings and slips to simplify the timbering layout.

Martin.

Hi Charles,

Glad it worked out ok.

Actually the middle step, converting from turnout to half-diamond, is unnecessary -- it works just the same without doing that.

But maybe not so intuitive to know what's happening, so I included it.

cheers,

Martin.
