This is the sort of thing which brings the red mist down when I'm working with Windows. It's of not the slightest significance, but for some reason that makes it all the more annoying. For some unfathomable reason, the Cleartype font smoothing doesn't work for the chevron characters ( << >> , less than, greater than). No other characters seem to be affected. See: chevrons1.png But wait -- launch the screen magnifier (Start > Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > Magnifier) and miraculously the font smoothing works: chevrons2.png I've tried this on two different systems, with both nVidia and ATI graphics and they are both the same (WindowsXP). Anyone care to confirm? Now where on earth would I look for a fix? Another email to Mr Gates? Martin. |

Is it just the font you're using that has the problem, or is it all of the fonts on your system: Arial >> Comic Sans >> Courier >> Times NR >> On Vista, with ClearType turned on, the above, Arial's and Times are jaggy, but Comic is smooth, and Courier's not bad given the kind of font it is. I'd guess it's something to do with the font metrics. |

You might also while away the hours with The Clear Type Power Toy to see if that helps: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypePowerToy.mspx BTW: Internet Explorer 7 ignores the setting for ClearType at the OS level and uses it's own setting |

No help whatsoever but by a tenuous link one of my favourite bookmarks is the microsoft font blog. http://blogs.msdn.com/fontblog/ There are only sporadic postings but they can be quite interesting, I've started to use Palatino Linotype font a lot more after reading this blog. There is a contact link for them, so it might be worth contacting them directly with your specific query. Adrian |
