Friends,

Recent new members here must be thinking they have joined a forum about computer programming rather than track design.

Apologies for that -- we do normally talk about using Templot rather than programming it. :)

As I approach 70 years of age, after 40 years of working on Templot one way or another, I wanted to find a way of ensuring it remains available for anyone who wants it if I'm unable to continue developing and supporting it, or running this web site, for any reason.

So I've been releasing the Templot program code files as open-source files.

That's proved to be more of a challenge than I expected.

After some discussions and fits and starts we have decided to have 2 separate sets of open-source files, intended for slightly different purposes. They are starting off identical.

I have created 2 new forum sections on Templot Club, for talking about these open-source versions of Templot:

TemplotMEC nuts and bolts is for talking about the TemplotMEC "kit" version of Templot, which is for users who want to dabble in programming, or use Templot as a means to learn about it. Lots of friendly help on there, and instructions for getting started with your own custom version of the Templot program.

That would be in addition to and separate from your existing Templot2 version of Templot, which is not affected in any way by these changes.

Find that new section at:

OpenTemplot Project is for those who are developing the OpenTemplot version of Templot on the SourceForge web site:

 http://sourceforge.net/projects/opentemplot/

This would become the official version of Templot in the event that Templot2 ceases to be available. This is a collaborative project by several Templot users, and you would be very welcome to join in.

Future developments could include a link with other open-source track planning programs such as XTrackCad, and with other open-source drawing and design programs.

In future it might also be possible to create native Apple Mac and Linux versions of Templot.

Find that new section at:

If you want to receive emails from these new sections you will need to add them to your emailed messages at:

cheers,

Martin.

Apologies -- I forgot to add the new TemplotMEC forum section to the Yahoo feed. Sorry about that.

If you get your Templot Club emails via Yahoo, you may have missed a few in the last couple of days. You can catch up by going to:
