Refer to my Share & Show Thread here: -  topic 3095  I have been doing a little research by reading the GWSG book on "GWR Switch and Crossing Practice" By David Smith and also studying Photographs of Moretonhampstead during the period of interest, BR(W)1948 to 1958. The GWSG Book suggests that from 1910, Guard Rails on Crossings up to 1 in 7 ½ were 11' 6" in Length with 4 Check Chairs. Guard Rails on Crossings over 1 in 7 ¾ were 14' 0" in Length with 5 Check Chairs. Studying Photographs of Moretonhampstead I found that the Crossings had just 4 Chairs on the Guard Rails. This, to me would suggest that the Crossing Angles in use at Moretonhampstead were less than 1 in 7 ¾ . Certainly the Diamond Crossing when checked with Templot using an NLS Map as a Background shape, shows it to be 1 in 7 ¼  .  I have been looking at  http://templot.com/companion/check_and_wing_rails.php and also topic 1465 with a view of reducing the length of check rails (from 14' 0" to 11' 6") and the number of chairs (from 5 to 4). I will keep reading but I a little baffled on how to proceed!

Hi David,

You can change the underlying settings for all check rails. Or you can adjust each individual check rail end.

The latter is the easiest, and avoids unintended consequences:

1. click real > adjust check rails ... menu item.

2. labels will appear on each check rail end. Click on the label, not the check rail.

3. click the rail length mouse action button to adjust the length manually by eye.

Or the click the length read-out and reduce it by the amount you want.

If you prefer to change the underlying settings instead, click the unadjusted settings... button, and read the notes. The default settings are for REA and need customising for GWR.

The REA default length for 1:7.25 check rails is size 2, 13ft total, comprising 9ft (108") working length, plus 4ft (48") extension length.

To reduce the length to 11ft-6in, that means making a total reduction of 1ft-6in (18") or 6mm in 4mm/ft scale. The reduction can be split between the working length and extension length to get the exact check rail positioning required:

cheers,

Martin.

Hello Martin,

Thank you for your reply, much appreciated.

I followed your advice and I am now able to adjust the length of the Check Rail. I didn't have the confidence to proceed in case I messed things up!.

Ok, well I think that's about it with the original plan. I now need to decide on the amount of compression required (something in the order of 5%) to fit the plan into the available space.

Regards

David

Attached is a Box File containing my efforts on reducing the length of the Check Rail. I concentrated on getting a symmetrical look around the Crossing Timbers.
