Hi. Please can I ask for some help / guidance?I wish to upload a background of the old Bishops Cleeve station on the Honeybourne line (fully appreciating that it is too long in 4mm scale for the available space I have).
However, after adding "http://maps.nls.uk/viee/109723995"  to the 'other screenshot map url' and saying 'yes' to the numerous script error messages, I simply get a blank (albeit with gridlines) nsl image.
Using this url directly on the nsl site (rather then through templot) this gives me the required map which I can then zoom in on / rotate etc.
Do I need to define the longitude and latitude and zoom factor and if so how or have I got this completely around my neck?
Or would an alternative be to zoom and rotate image on nsl site and pdf this and then try to add this image as a background?
Thank you for any thoughts.
Regards
Matt

Hi Matt,

There is a typo in that link URL, "viee" should be "view".

If you try again using this:

https://maps.nls.uk/view/109723995#zoom=6&lat=8610&lon=11968&layers=BT

it should work.

Don't forget to set your gauge/scale before you start.

There is a function in the background shapes to twist the image (by 90 degrees or about) to get a better framing for use. You would likely need to make several screenshots and align them. Then use crop/combine to create the finished background map.

Or if you are on a widescreen monitor you may prefer to rotate it first in a different browser (unfortunately the NLS rotation doesn't work in the Windows embedded browser in Templot), and then make and size the screenshot manually.

Or if you have the setting available on your system, you could rotate the entire screen image for Templot.

See this topic for more information:

If you say your model scale I can do it for you and post the Templot files here.

cheers,

Martin.

Thank you for your prompt response Martin.
Apologies the url I originally used in templot did contain "view" rather than "viee"....it was simply a typo in my message!
I will try the suggested full url when I next get the opportunity and let you know how I get on...it might not be for a couple of days though; so many domestic chores have priority.

Thank you again
Matt

Hi Martin. I have just tried the full url and unfortunately, after all the script error messages, I still simply get a blank nsl image with gridlines.
You kindly mentioned that you could capture the image for me if this didn't work; the scale I am working with is EM.
If you could do this I would greatly appreciate it, although there is no hurry!
Thank you again for your help.
Regards
Matt

Hi Matt,

It's strange that you are getting grid lines because that is a County Series map from 1923, i.e. before the OS grid was invented.

However, here you go. :)

2 files. Put them both in the same folder*, and then reload the BGS file into your background shapes.

*Anywhere you like, but usually  C:\TEMPLOT_DEV\SHAPE-FILES\

Here first is the BGS file.

cheers,

Martin.

And here is the SK81 image file.

If you would prefer it the other way up, use the twist function to rotate it 180 degrees, or copy and paste the image into your graphics editor to do that, then copy and paste it back.

It's black on white as captured. For myself I would change it to a negative image, and reduce the contrast, for easier working over it.

More about all that at:

 http://85a.co.uk/forum/view_topic.php?id=3376&forum_id=3#p26579

If you would like me to do any of that for you, just ask.

Here's the SK81 file.

cheers,

Martin.

Thank you Martin,
That has worked a treat.

For info., when I said gridlines I didn't mean OS gridlines I was referring to background squares upon which the OS map is shown on the nsl website. If choosing a map through the nsl site, the chosen map would appear on screen with the background squares around the image. When attempting to select through templot all I ended up with was the background squares and no map image.

Thank again.

Matt

Hi Matt,

Glad it worked. :)

Those squared lines are just the background pattern on the NSL page, they don't have any dimensional meaning.

How long did you wait for the map image to appear? The Windows embedded browser is noticeably slower than modern browsers. If you can see the NSL background you have established a good connection to the NSL web site (the tricky bit). Waiting for the map is then the easy bit, but it could take quite a while.

If it hasn't appeared after a few minutes, it would be worth refreshing the page -- click on the web page and then press CTRL+F5 on the keyboard. Or alternatively try again later.

I will add a note about this to the notes.

cheers,

Martin.
