How do I shift and join a Diamond Crossing?  So far the only solution I have found is to group the two halves and move them around using the commands on the Group menu which is rather cumbersome.  I have attempted a forum search without success.

Help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Murray,

If you have a finished diamond-crossing, then yes you need to use the group functions to move it about, and the notch-linking functions to join it to other templates. It is easy to re-create the group of two templates at any time if you use the prefix tags on the template names.

However, there is seldom any need to move a finished diamond-crossing. All you need to do is move one of the half-diamonds, and then make a full diamond-crossing from it once it is in position. That's the tools > make diamond-crossing menu item. It even works starting from a turnout. :)

But mostly in practice, you wouldn't move a half-diamond template either. Most templates are created in their finished positions in the track plan in the first place. This is especially the case with diamond-crossings and slips.

I have made you 3 short video clips showing the relevant functions doing that.

Sorry the videos are scruffy, I made them quickly without time-consuming editing or adding any interactive notes. They are in online MP4 format, they make take a short while to load. Click the video to stop and start at any frame.

The first one shows how to create an ordinary regular ladder crossover, a very common prototype formation. Only one click needed to do that. Here's the video:

The next video shows the tools > make diamond-crossing function to create a regular diamond-crossing in situ as the track plan develops:

Sometimes you need an irregular diamond-crossing if the tracks differ in radii. For that you use the make diamond-crossing at intersection function. Here's the video for that:

Notice in all these videos that the shift & join functions are not used. They are provided mainly to help beginners get started.

Ask again if anything is unclear. Attach your .box file if it helps.

cheers,

Martin.

Martin

Fantastic - videos extremely useful. As a newbie to Templot I have just been exploring how to use it. I see now that creating separate templates and then linking them together is not the way to go but get the basic track down and then add turnouts, crossovers etc where they are needed.

Many thanks for the informative help.

Kind regards

Murray
