Hi Martin

I'm still here....:-)

Not sure if this is a problem or not, but I am being asked to upgrade my Apple OS from Mojave to Catalina and am a little concerned about warnings on 32 bit and 62 bit software. It says that 32 bit software will no longer be supported.

It suggests running a system report to identify 32 bit applications and up came Templot Forum etc as incompatible.

I run Templot on my Windows based PC so that's not an issue, but does this mean I can now longer read read the Forum via my Mac?

Seems you are not alone as my version of Office is also listed, so now I'm caught between a rock and hard place. If I don't upgrade I may lose security options etc, but if I do, then I may be faced with non operational applications/software.

Can you throw any light on this and does this mean no access to the forum?

Hi Gordon,

And I'm still here -- good to hear from you. :)

Sorry, I don't have an Apple Mac and know nothing about them.

However, the upgrade definitely won't have any effect on accessing this Templot Club forum or the Templot Companion docs, because they are web pages, not programs. The upgrade will certainly include a browser which will continue to display them just fine (and everything else on the web).

What effect this upgrade will have on those using CrossOver/Winebottler/Wine to run Templot on a Mac, I can't say, but someone here will know. :?

cheers,

Martin.

That’s the bit (web pages) that I couldn’t understand, but I’m far from an expert and thought I’d just ask the question.
Templot won’t be an issue for me as that’s on my Windows PC, but I am a little peed off having to renew my Office software or staying where I am with Mojave.

I suspect I’ll have to bite the bullet sooner or later, as it appears Apple will only guarantee compatibility with the last three major software releases. That’s probably only three years based on the speed of new OS systems.

Happy days.....:D

Thanks John. My wife and I have worked on Word and Excel for years, so we are both well versed. I doubt that we would want to have to learn a whole new package unless there was a guarantee all our our existing documents will be compatible.

Open Office may have the same problem according to various Mac forums and until they develop a 64 bit version, it is unlikely to be compatible with Catalina.

Getting back to Templot, I have used Crossover to occasionally run PC software on my Mac - Templot being one of them. Crossover issued a warning on 7th October:
"If you use CrossOver for macOS, this information is VERY IMPORTANT for you.

Earlier today, Apple released the new macOS Catalina. Catalina does not support 32-bit applications. Currently, CrossOver still uses pieces of 32-bit code for every function and will not launch or install any Windows apps in Catalina. If CrossOver is critical to you macOS experience, we ask that you wait on upgrading to Catalina until we release a Catalina compatible version.

At this time, we anticipate that an alpha version will be available sometime in the next 30 days. We will continue to update you as development progresses."

So I have dusted off my ancient Windoze laptop and use that when needed until Crossover is updated.

Dave

Has anyone found a solution to run Templot on a Mac that's running Catalina other than using Parallels (at £70) ? Since I upgraded to Catalina can't run Templot via winebottler.

I think Parallels is also having problems, so you might want hold back on buying it, see:

 http://85a.co.uk/forum/view_topic.php?id=3550&forum_id=1#p28414

I believe Macs have a utility called BootCamp which lets you bypass the Apple OS and boot into Linux (free) or Windows (paid for) on startup. Most Linux distributions have a single-click install option for Wine.

However my knowledge of Macs is nil, so treat the above with caution.

Someone here will know a way of getting Templot running for you.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Rod

I have run Templot without significant problems on my MacBook using Codeweavers Crossover for several years. However, like Parallels, it will not (yet) run 32-bit apps with MacOS Catalina. The developers have been totally flat-footed in failing to anticipate the need for 32-bit support. The last advice that I got from Codeweavers on 18th November was:

Hi folks,

It's been two weeks; we feel we owe everyone an update on our efforts to support 32 bit Windows applications on macOS Catalina, despite Apple's decision to terminate support for 32 bit applications.

I'm happy to announce that we have released the first beta version of CrossOver 19 on Friday, November 15, 2019 to our community of advocates and beta testers.  Further, our alpha testing and other internal testing has gone well, so I am confident that we will have a final product ready before the end of the year.
...
Now that our beta process is underway, we are on track to have a production quality version of CrossOver 19 before the end of the year. We recommend that you wait for the production release if you can.

I still have a nasty Windoze-based laptop that I can use for Templot in the meantime but look forward to the next Crossover update.

Dave

Just received notification from Codeweavers that their upgrade to Crossover is now available. I have downloaded and installed Crossover 19 and can confirm that Templot 2.25b is now running quite happily on my Catalina-OS-based MacBook Pro.

I am using Templot on an iMac running OS Catalina 10.15.1

Would like to point out that Wine Bottler does not work with OS Catalina, but that Crossover works excellently, and is far cheaper than the Parallels alternative.

I would never have found Crossover if it wasn’t for reading about it in the Club messages, thanks to all who have posted information about this.

Kind Regards,

Eve Wallis

Hi Eve,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

Thanks for letting us know about this, also to Dave.

I try to ensure that Templot runs well under Wine, but I can test it only on Linux as I don't have a Mac computer, or know anything about Macs.

So I rely on others to let me know how Templot is doing on Macs -- I know CrossOver is a popular way of running Templot on there.

cheers,

Martin.

I'm running Templot under Parallels on OS Catalina. I've had no issues so far, it's actually significantly quicker than on the dedicated PC I was using before. The only gripe is the shortcuts I'd got used to no longer work as well on the mac keyboard. You have to use modifier keys to work them but they're often at the opposite ends of the keyboard. I did think about bootcamp as I had that set up on my previous iMac but Parallels allows me to work efficiently in both OS's together.

Thanks for the report.

If you can tell me which keys are needed and how to access them in Windows (anyone?) I might be able to add some additional more convenient shortcuts.

Alternatively, what happens if you plug a Windows USB keyboard into a Mac? Can Parallels find it and use it?

cheers,

Martin.

I shall look closer and try each function but basically you have to use the fn (function) key +F5 or whichever shortcut. The upshot is that these shortcuts are used within Parallels itself so it's a matter of isolating each one.  I shall also try my logitech pc keyboard and see what happens. Watch this space

I now remember that we have been here before. :)

To use the function keys on a Mac without pressing the Fn key do this:

1. click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen, then select System Preferences.

2. click the Keyboard icon, then tick the box marked “Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.”

3. close the window to save your changes.

I have no idea if it works (no Mac), or on which version(s) of a Mac, it is copied from a previous message.

cheers,

Martin.

MartinJust had a 'proper' play around with Templot and can confirm with that Mac keyboard setting it functions just as a PC keyboard. Even the END key is replicated with Fn+arrow right. HOME is Fn+arrow left.
All the functions key work on the trackpad including those with Shift key + function key commands and Shift+Ctrl and Function key.
I've printed out the shortcut chart to 'properly' learn.

I've just had a look at my Mac which updated to Catalina the other week; the first thing that didn't work was the HP printer which took a 40 minute chat with the apple help desk to get that working and download the new software from HP. Templot won't load and wine has disappeared completely. I'm lost..maybe my old windoze 7 machine will still work but how do I find my box files to transfer across? I'm getting ever older and increasingly fed up with technology!

The latest version of CrossOver/Wine is reported now working fine on updated Macs, at least with Templot. See Eve's post above:

You can find your box files in the Wine C:\TEMPLOT_DEV\BOX-FILES\ folder (unless you put them somewhere else, in which case only you know where.)

cheers,

Martin.

Hello Roy,
I do not have any Apple computers so this is just a suggestion.
Maybe your wine folder has become "hidden" due to your update.
In Linux the wine folder is "hidden" as standard and it needs the setting for "hidden" folders changing.
I don't know if this is the case with your machine but it may be worth looking into.
Regards
Trevor.

I've just downloaded the free trial bit of CrossOver, and Templot seems to run. However, I don't know where to start looking for the box files which have all vanished! There's a Mac folder called "relocated items", maybe in there? Maybe I'll have to look in the blue and white face thing.

Anyone got any ideas? It didn't seem to find anything Templot when I first looked.

They won't be backed up on here unless you backed them up yourself. There is a section on here where any member can back up their Templot files:

 http://85a.co.uk/forum/view_category.php?id=4

If you have found a MECBOX file, that is where the others will be, if they still exist. Try searching for BOX files.

I have found that it's a good idea when using Wine to save files on a USB memory stick rather than on the system. That way they can always be found, and can also be transferred to a Windows computer if you ever need to. For some reason Wine makes it difficult to find its files on the system, if you don't know where to look.

cheers,

Martin.

Having had another look at the Mac "finder", I tried searching under *.box, it didn't find anything. However, another search for .box found everything that was missing. so it was a case of testing a couple, right click on the icon of the file, open with Templot 2 and hey, it loads up. When quitting Templot it wants to save the files to Mecbox, remembering what you said, yes, always. It takes a bit of time, but seems to work. all I need to find now are the track plans i imported to make the track anyway!
