Here is a summary of the changes in Templot program update 224a
, released 19th November 2019.
The main purpose of this release is to provide a means to transfer data from Templot2
to the open-source versions of Templot (Templot3
1. new MECBOX file format
Until now there was no means to transfer BOX
data files from Templot2 to the open-source versions of Templot, which use the BOX3
data format. The open-source versions can't load BOX files directly because of unavoidable differences in data formats between the compilers. Likewise Templot2 can't load the open-source BOX3 files.
Which was a significant deterrent to making much use of the open-source versions.
Not before time, I have now in this 224a
update got round to doing something about that.
I have created a new MECBOX
file format as a go-between to perform transfers between the versions.
It is text-based, which means it is quite slow to save and load large files. But you need only transfer a file once, after which you can save it in BOX3
format for future working.
MECBOX files are exported
from one version of Templot and imported
into another. After the transfer has taken place, the MECBOX file could be deleted, although it would be worth keeping as a backup.
There is a new transfer
menu in the storage box, with menu items to export
a MECBOX file of your current box contents (track plan), or to import
a MECBOX file if you wish:
There is also an option to export a matching MECBOX file every time you save a normal BOX file:
The above option is on by default and you probably want to leave it on, so that any work you do in Templot2 will be automatically backed up for possible future use in Templot3 or TemplotMEC. But it does make saving noticeably slower, so for large track plans you may want to turn it off and export a MECBOX file manually occasionally.
You can also export MECBOX files from the file viewer
. This is useful if you have a large number of BOX files to export -- you can if you wish export an entire folder-full in one go (there will be time to make a coffee while waiting
). The MECBOX files are exported into the same folder as the source BOX file:
It is likely that the MECBOX functions will need refining in the light of experience -- please report any issues here on Templot Club. I haven't found any errors yet, but I feel sure there must be a few waiting to be discovered.
The open-source versions of Templot can be found at:
N.B. They are still in development and don't yet provide the same full functionality as Templot2.
2. saved program preferences
Your saved program preferences
now include your chosen colour scheme
for the trackpad, and your current setting for having the background template name labels
on or off (END

3. adjacent track centres
There is a new option to make the adjacent track centres
