Print error on blunt nose - Templot talk - Forums

Hi Martin
I've found a bit of a curiosity when printing templates where the blunt nose as displayed on the screen continues to a sharp point on the printouts. On the print preview attached, you can see that the centre crossing is ok, but the other two show the rails continuing to the fine point. Those two happen to be gaunt turnouts, but on the attached box file there's a normal turnout that shows the same effect.

Not really a problem from a build point of view, but probably something that shouldn't happen, or I've done something strange!

Yes, you have done something strange!

You have set the rail-section to flat-bottom, but then set the rail foot width to be the same as the head width.

See real > rails > rail section data...

That may be intentional to represent some odd Festiniog rail section (?), but since you have set the middle crossing to bullhead I suspect it's an error.

What you are seeing in the print is the intersection of the rail foot lines -- for the vee nose Templot blunts the rail head only. The foot lines are not visible elsewhere because you have set vertical rail and the rail head lines are drawn directly over them.

Foot lines are never drawn on the screen, it would make the diagrams too cluttered, they appear in the output only (and only for background templates, not the control template).

The foot lines are not necessarily prototypically correct -- around the switch planing for example. That's because I don't have enough prototype data, and what I do have would be a minefield to represent on the templates. The main purpose of the foot lines is as a construction guide to make it easier to align FB rail over the template.

Good to see a 3-way stub turnout -- not many of those in Templot.

Yes, you have done something strange!

Ah, so I have! Much of the rest of the layout is FB rail, so I must have just copied a FB turnout or two without thinking. The sections I wanted in BH were grouped then the rails section data applied to the group - it didn't occur to me that some of those templates might have (incorrectly) been FB rail.

Anyway, all corrected now - thanks for your quick reply!

This will be the second version of this 3-way stub turnout. The first was built maybe 15 years ago but wasn't that reliable. I also didn't calculate the required spacing between the stub ends to avoid flanges hitting them. This has all be sorted for this layout and my fine tolerance track-building skills have improved!
