This is a long term project for the future so not much progress will be seen for some time. Having started an N gauge layout based on Lichfield/Tamworth which as numerous "features" (ok, flaws) and subsequently seeing Castle Hill at Wakefield, it was inspiring to see a nice scenic 30' long 2mm layout. The fact that it all packs into one reasonable size vehicle was even more reason to get me thinking (it doesn't take much!). My main interests lie in the WCML scene around the turn of the century so the prospect of running scale length trains on a long gentle curve along a ~30' layout seemed quite appealing. I initially thought of basing the plan on Rugeley Trent Valley with a condensed run to Colwich Junction but having used scale turnout plans rather than Peco geometry I found it took a much larger distance to contain all the trackwork - it'll be worth it for a more realistic appearance though. Having started to get to grips with Templot I have produced the attached plan. I have yet to complete one end of the fiddle yard where the Cannock lines rejoin the main lines. The fiddle yard is very simple, but with the length of each road I could fit around six long scale length trains on each road, so with a few shorter trains there should be plenty of storage space without the need to construct too many turnouts. |

That's impressive Mark I wish you well building it. Did you lay it out on an OS map or a track plan or what? Regards Raymond |

The track was not overlaid on any background but follows the approximate shape to give the general feel of the prototype. I used Google to get the aerial views then cropped the screen captures and stitched the images together in Xara to give the overall plan. The curve to the R/H end of the layout is in the wrong direction but would not have fitted in with the overall shape so I exercised the rights of my modellers licence! The platforms will be roughly to scale length on the model of about 2' and 3' for the down and up platforms respectively. |

It certainly is impressive. Err - the turn of which century? Ie are you going to have "The Corridor" and LNWR compound 0-8-0s or it it to be modern image? I visited Rugeley twice rather a long time ago when the prototype Deltic was on teh LMR and I saw it two or three times come roaring through Rugeley. John John |

I did wonder whether to make a comment on the "turn of the century" phrase seen as it is more commonly used regarding 1900 (and before any more comments are made thats the year, not 7pm!) My layout will be based around the year 2000ish so a mix of loco hauled/propelled passenger express stock along with the Pendolino once it is available, Central trains class 153s, 158s and 170s and various freight hauliers. I need to do a bit more research on prototypical trains and the not is proving to be a useful tool with sites such as Flickr and Fotopic. |
