I'm seriously contemplating ordering a few EMU kits from Dc kits before they run out as they are to be retooled. Along with southern pride kits I'm pondering a Brummie based ohle layout set in the mid 80s.

What I'm after with this is somewhere Birmingham based with wires to justify the EMUs, but to be commuter based. In other words I want to run emus and wires without having to use long express trains and coaching rakes etc. So thinking wise I first looked at Aston, with its junctions, in the 80s the Trent valley wasn't electrified so I can use a good mix of Dmus and Emus together. But I wasn't happy with building Aston. Then I've a fascination for Duddeston, but then I want to keep the layout in quite a compact width, so obviously I'm unable to model the carriage sidings or the Wagon repair works or the multitude of other sidings based at Duddeston. So with this in mind I've tried to make a mix of the two and this is what I've come up with so far. The station is heavily based around Duddeston with a bridge over the station area, but with a Aston style junction. So with this in mind I've been looking into what I'd call it. The first fairly obvious name wouldve been 'Duddaston', but then I thought that to be a little naff, so I think I've come to the decision that the layout would probably bear the name Nechells or Nechells junction.

Martin I was wondering whether you'd be able to put my box file through your magic irregular diamonds machine and let me know if the crossing angle is acceptable, as I think it might be just on the limits but I'm not sure. It should be right in the centre of the plan.

Hopefully more to follow.

Kind regards

Dave

Hi Dave,

Not only irregular, but on a transition curve. :)

Here you go. Crossing angles left to right are:

1:9.69 V-crossing
1:7.52 K-crossings
1:6.59 V-crossing

So the 1:7.52 should be ok for fixed K-crossings.

1. normal view (sorry I can't attach it, the file formats won't match):

2. as a bgs file loaded into version 091c :

BGS file attached. If you load (or add) it into your background shapes, you should be able to remove the overlaid templates and everything should match up.

(I changed the 9ft timbering in your file to 8ft-6in.)

regards,

Martin.

Thats really great thanks Martin.

Strange really, I'd sworn I'd checked when starting what timber size was selected, but then I always did have a strange feeling something wasn't quite correct as the tracks looked close together at a scale 6' way.

I might offer it up to the masses on RMweb to get some brutal feedback later. Would you or anyone looking consider the plan to be plausable given the spaces between the main tracks and the outer tracks on the left half of the plan are to be two island style platforms. ala

Looking good there Dave,

If you're thinking "Midlandsish" - how about the old LNWR route via Walsall that branches off from Wolverhampton?

I remember in the '80s lots of 304s and 310s plying that little commuter route. Most of the expresses went direct to New Street although there were the occasional diversions.

Have you also had a look at the P4 New Street website: truly awe inspiring scale and trackwork with some excellent modelling of the overhead wiring?

Regards,

Jim
