Hi Martin I've found what I think is a genuine bug in Templot. Basically, I've just re-installed XP-SP3 from scratch on my main PC, and tried to run 0.91c. I got the splash screen, then the Microsoft "Windows has encountered an error..." box - closing that took the splash screen with it. An install of 0.74b worked fine, but it did warn me that there were no printer drivers installed (I hadn't got that far yet in the re-install). Stuck a printer driver on, and Templot 0.91c then worked fine! It looks like somewhere between 0.74b and 0.91c, the bit of code that detects installed printer drivers has broken. I think this is the first time I've ever seen Templot produce the Windows crash message! Paul |

There is (and always has been) a note on the download page: red_pointer.gif  Templot may not be able to run if there is no default printer on the system. If there is no printer driver yet installed on your system, please install one before running Templot. You don't need a printer to be physically present, all that is needed is the driver program from the Windows CD-ROM for a typical printer, e.g. HP Deskjet. To install the driver, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Printers > Add Printer.And it is repeated on the Pug 091c download topic: topic 330 ( Just a reminder that Templot needs a default local printer -- not a network printer -- to be able to run. A physical printer is not necessary, only the printer driver is needed. A virtual printer such as a fax driver or PDF generator will do fine. A free PDF printer driver can be downloaded from: http://www.pdf995.com/download.html ) What's strange is that "may not be able to run" for 074b (it seems to vary with different systems) has become "definitely will not be able to run" for 091c. Since the code is identical, the change must be in the later version of the compiler which I'm using for 09x. Templot can't start without knowing a printer page size for the page outlines on the pad, and it also needs a list of available printers to initialise the default calibration settings. It's on my list of things to do something about. Exactly what, I'm not sure.  But thanks for reporting it.  regards, Martin. |

Hi MartinYes, this is a known issueMight have known it was nothing new! It's on my list of things to do something about. Exactly what, I'm not sure.I guess providing a Templot message as appears in 0.74b would be good! I had a panic moment when I just got Microsoft's "Bog off" box with no meaningful error message. It was the Templot error box in 0.74b that gave me a clue. I guess this is a low priority fix though as I can't think why anyone would install Templot on a machine that has no print drivers installed in normal use! Cheers |

Just a thought coming from a deep ignorance of Templot programing, whould it be possible to proveide a simple generic (virtual?)printer driver that would be ignored in favour of whatever driver was on the system? | |||

I don't know why it doesn't appear, it's exactly the same code as in 074b and 082d. Only the compiler is different. I guess this is a low priority fix though as I can't think why anyone would install Templot on a machine that has no print drivers installed in normal use!It seems installing Templot is the very first thing some folks do after taking their new computer out of its box!  What I don't understand is why Windows can't default to the screen device when there is no printer driver available. The screen size is known, the dpi res is known -- these could easily be returned in place of the printer info. For example 1280 x 1024 at 96dpi equates to 13.33" x 10.67" Landscape. Templot could easily start up with these settings if Windows didn't throw a tantrum instead when asked about the printer. regards, Martin. |
