Hello Martin.
Is there a reason why .xls spreadsheet files are not one of the permitted file types that can be attached to a forum posting?
Regards
Tony W.

Hi Tony,

They are now. :)

But please note that not everyone has the means to open them -- me included. :(

It would be much better to export them from Excel in a format which everyone can access such as PDF.

Or if you export them as CSV or HTML you could copy them directly into your message. :)

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin.
I realise that not everyone can use spreadsheets whether they be Excel format or otherwise and they are normally written for a particular operating system. However I have a small spreadsheet, which I wanted to post for those who may find it useful and found I could not post it last night. For a given Radius curve, Chord and Versine, if you know two of them it will calculate the third. It is very easy to use. I will try again later.
Regards
Tony.

Hi Tony,

XLS spreadsheet files can now be attached here.

However, calculating versines can be done directly in Templot: :)

The dummy vehicle clearance mouse action can be used to measure the centre axle side-play needed on 6-wheel vehicles at different radii.

1. set the control template to the desired radius.

2. set the body length to match the wheelbase (dimensions... button).

3. set the body width to match the track gauge.

The clearance marker can then be adjusted by mouse action to align with the outer rail. Read the versine dimension as the clearance showing (in prototype inches):

Hi Martin.
I now have a bit of time to follow up on this thread. First let me say that your dummy vehicle tool is a brilliant concept and I have found it very useful for checking clearances and I fully accept that it can be used for measuring versines and end throw for any pre-defined vehicle / wheelbase size / combination. The graphical interface makes it very appealing for anyone regardless of their technical abilities and is doubtless why you chose this approach.
My little speadsheet is intended for general use and not just with model railways.  For instance, it can be used in different ways and not just for calculating versines, if you have a curve of unknown radius, you can mark a chord and measure the versine. It will calculate the radius of that curve. I will post it as a separate topic rather than add it to the end of this where it is less obvious.

Thanks
Tony.
