I am currently designing a large O gauge garden railway. It is very nearly there thanks to the fantastic help I have had from this group, However, I am having trouble with one last junction. If you can imagine a double track oval with a minimum radius of 8 feet, I would like to create a double junction off one of the curved ends of the double track. It does not matter what size turnouts or diamonds are required but I am unsure about how the diamond is created. Does it have to be curviform due to the asymmetrical nature of the curves? So far everything I have tried tends to create radii that are smaller than the minimum 8 foot I want to use.

Regards

Les

Hi Les,

Is the double-junction diverging towards the outside of the oval or towards the inside?

If the inside, it will not be possible to have an 8ft radius for the inside curve if the oval radius is 8ft.

If the outside, any radius should be possible. Perhaps you could post your .box file here or a screenshot or sketch.

There is a video showing how to create a diverging double-junction -- click the help > watch a video > Scruff Video curviform double junction menu item.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks for your helpful reply.  I read from previous forum posts about the curved crossing video but could not find it.  I have attached a box file of what I am trying to achieve.  I know it is not perfect as I have really struggled with this.  Thank you once again.
Regards
Les

Hi Les,

You seem to have done quite well in creating the junction.

But there is one big snag, and I don't know how to tell you this -- it's not 0 gauge. :(

You have designed it using the fictional startup T-55 gauge at 5.5mm/ft. You should have received a warning about this a few minutes after starting the Templot session.

It would be possible to do an instant conversion, but then of course it would not be 8ft radius, and may introduce some discrepancies.

So I would recommend starting again in 0 gauge -- click in the gauge menu before you begin, and choose your gauge. 0-MF is now regarded by many as the best option for new layouts.

I will have another look at this later and do something for you.

As there is no contraflexure it doesn't need to be a curviform junction, regular will be fine. Just one click on tools > make ladder crossover and you will be half way there, and it will all be 8ft radius.

A long slender 1:12 junction will be very nice to look at, but 1:12 vees and crossings are harder work to file and build. 1:9 or 1:10 would be less work. Also although 1:12 will work fine in 0-MF, it might be a bit bumpy in GOG-Fine with Slater's type wheels.

regards,

Martin.

A senior moment with the wrong gauge.  Sorry about that.  I have redrawn the file as best I can and have attached it.  I don't want to go down the 31.5mm route as I want to stay with GOG-F.  This time I used B8s as per your suggestion and it seems to have worked out OK.  I have not bothered with the timbering at this stage but will be interested in any criticism you might have.
Regards
Les
