I have a completed track plan in EM gauge and the resulting layout is 16' in length.
I am contemplating building in N to reduce the overall space I would need but when I change the gauge on the plan to N it just makes the component track items smaller - the overall size doesn't change and remains at 16'.
Is there a way to achieve this?
Thanks
David

Hi David,

Go to gauge > other gauges... menu item. Select the required new gauge/scale on the list. Click the convert group button above the list. If you haven't created a group of templates, you will have the option to group all of them for the conversion.

Unfortunately it is not mathematically possible to do a perfect conversion unless the gauge:scale ratio and the gauge:flangeway-gap ratio remain the same. In practice this means only the proto gauges convert closely: S7 - S - P4 - Proto87 - S2 etc., and even then there may be some tiny differences.

For other gauge conversions there are likely to be some slight mismatches, overlaps or gaps between the templates which need tidying up. But usually this is much quicker to do than starting again from scratch.

The plain track templates will always convert exactly, so these shouldn't need changing and make a useful guide in re-adjusting the pointwork templates to fit.

If you have changed the scale, and you have used a background map or scan as a guide, note that this will need scaling up or down to match the new model scale.

First on the background shapes dialog, on the picture options tab, change the scaling lock option to grid. Then select the picture shape in the list, and on the modify shape tab, click the scale by... button. Enter the required percentage change as: new scale in mm, multiplied by 100, and divided by old scale in mm. Click the ? info button and read the notes.

In your case:

N scale (UK) is  2.06mm/ft
EM scale is 4mm/ft

So the percentage change needed is 2.06 x 100 / 4 = 51.5%

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,
I'm revisiting this issue and just went through the process to convert my EM templates to TT-F. It all seemed to work, I saved the new version into a new box file, closed & reopened it. However, as soon as I picked a point template and made it the control it told me it was EM gauge - did I miss a step?
Thanks

David

Hi David,

The convert group button converts only background templates, and then only templates which are currently members of a group.

In order also to convert the control template, it is necessary to click the OK button on the gauge dialog, after clicking the convert group button.

If it was a background template that didn't get converted, are you sure it was in the group?

If you followed all the above, it is possible that you have found a bug, although I can't reproduce it at present. Please can you say exactly what you clicked in what order?

In particular, although the template was labelled EM, what was its actual gauge and scale?

cheers,

Martin.

Now that's a mystery - I repeated what I had done but this time it worked fine. I must have missed a step the last time, sorry for the confusion
Thanks again

David
