Before making more beginner videos I thought a revamp to the beginner buttons would be helpful. I wanted to make them a bit more prominent and add a couple more.

To keep within the 1024 width for small screens, that meant adding a second row. Which eats into screen space, but there is always a trade-off with any change. Most users now have larger screens than in the early days of Templot.

I have moved all the functions which make changes to the control template to the bottom row:

The ROTATE button has been reinstated for those mourning its loss in version 215. Plus T|P for insert turnout/convert to plain track, and the ORBIT mouse action. This is more beginner-friendly than snake, because like roam it ignores the peg position. I retained the STOP button for the legacy videos, even though it is now duplicated on the mouse action panel.

That left some space on the top row for a few quick-access buttons to the tools > make ... functions. I have chosen the four most frequently used. Obviously the full menu is still there for more.

Plus I have added a more prominent reminder of the current track gauge, for times when the info panel is hidden. I'm still in two minds about that.

This will be in the next program update. Unless I change my mind and it isn't. :)

Comments welcome.

regards,

Martin.

I like it. The track gauge reminder will help some users when they start the program and haven't update preferences for their chosen gauge, will also be useful for those who build in multiple scales to have a visual guide to make sure they've switched to the correct one.

Martin,

I just got used to not having the Rotate button, can't you take it away again ? I am sure the F8 key is fine to make a return, at least you won't get people asking where it is.

Re the default track gauge, the prominent warning on the screen is fine but people should be aware of the start.box file option containing a single template if they usually want to start with the same gauge. Maybe that route could be mentioned in the T-55 warning dialogue. Glad you picked the most common gauge for the screenshot above :D

Must get back to the ballasting.....

Rob
