If you are not using Windows10 you can ignore all this. :D

If you are using Windows10 you may have noticed that in one of the recent updates Microsoft have changed the way the mouse wheel works.

Generally this is a Good Thing, except when it isn't. :?

There is a lot of discussion about this on the Windows forums, but as usual it seems to be impossible to find definitive information from Microsoft.

The change applies to all software, not only Templot. I haven't made any changes in Templot itself.

What now happens is that wheel events go to whichever window the mouse happens to be over, regardless of whether that window has focus or whether some other window is showing modal. Except in the case of child windows, where the wheel events now go always to the parent window, and there doesn't seem to be any way for a child window to receive wheel events.

What does this mean in Templot?

Generally it means that you can zoom the trackpad on the mouse wheel in situations where previously you could not. For example after using the make transition function you will see this dialog:

2_181744_220000000.png2_181744_220000000.png

Previously, because this dialog shows modal*, it was necessary to use the zoom and pan buttons on this dialog if needed to see the transition curve. That is still the case for the pan buttons, but now in Windows10 you can zoom the trackpad behind this dialog simply by moving the mouse over the trackpad and rolling the mouse wheel.

However, I can't remove the zoom buttons because they are still needed in Windows7, and on Wine/CrossOver.

There are now some situations where the new behaviour is not so helpful, and I will need to make some changes -- for example:

1. when the print pages preview or the pdf pages preview is showing for the output, accidentally rolling the mouse wheel over the preview reverts to the trackpad view and loses the pages preview, with no way back. This is a great nuisance for Windows10 users, and I will get a fix done soon.

2. when the stay-visible help notes are showing, there is no way for Windows10 users to scroll them. I will get some scrollbars added.

There are probably other similar situations. If you find one, please let me know. Thanks.

Just to repeat, this is a change by Microsoft in Windows10, I haven't changed anything in Templot. You may find similar nuisances in other software.

*a dialog showing modal means Templot can't continue until it gets an answer to the question, so you must respond to the dialog before you can click anywhere else or do anything else. You get a "ping" if you try.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

I am not using Windows 10 :D but changes in Microsoft's operating parameters mus be murder for people like yourself. Just been having a quick browse around and ( old ) pages like this are hard enough to follow without having to write code to be compliant with them :-

Older Window Management

Sometimes it is hard enough when using web pages to make sure you don't stray into embedded items on the page when scrolling though. Scroll down through this page using the mouse wheel ( on Win 7 ) and if you are on the left hand half of the page you suddenly find the map scrolling instead of the whole page :-

Example model shop

( Other model shops are available - but only just  :( )

p.s.

Yes and no.

There is a (probably little-known) option in Templot to use the mouse wheel for panning the trackpad. CTRL+ROLL pans the trackpad. Initially left-right, and CTRL+MIDDLE CLICK swaps to up-down.

Now with a modal dialog showing, left-right works, but there is no way to swap to up-down because clicks are not accepted while the modal dialog is present.

Likewise SHIFT+CTRL+ROLL works to cycle the control template through the rollback register while a modal dialog is showing. This could cause lots of problems if Templot is in the middle of a function such as make slip.

I need to go through all this stuff and see what the implications will be.

Martin.

Interesting. I found a problem with Turbocad 20 (2D) recently where I can zoom using the mouse wheel with a corded mouse but not with a cordless mouse. Must check again to see if this has made a difference. Would like to ditch the corded mouse.

Thanks Rob.

That's general behaviour in web browsers nowadays. For example on the Templot Companion you can scroll whichever of the 3 columns the mouse is over:

 http://templot.com/companion/

But I don't think I've got any separately scrollable/zoomable content mixed in the main pages. It's a minefield to test everything in half a dozen different browsers on a multitude of different mobile and desktop devices.

cheers,

Martin.

Egg on face time. But not much egg, and I'm not the only one.

It turns out there is now a setting in Windows10:

Settings > Devices > Mouse > "Scroll inactive windows when I hover over them".

The default setting is on, but it can be turned off.

As far as I can find, there is no such setting in Windows7.

Things I don't know:

When was this setting introduced? Is it new in the latest updates, or was it introduced at some previous time in Windows 8, 8.1, 10?

If the latter, presumably the default setting was originally off, and the latest updates have changed it to on?

In which actual update did these changes take place? There have been several in recent weeks.

Things I do know:

"Scroll" is not the correct description for this option. A window receives the wheel events regardless of what it does with them. For example in Templot the mouse wheel is normally used to zoom, not scroll. And optionally to cycle the undo/redo changes rollback register for the control template.

cheers,

Martin.

Aha... Nice one Martin. I have been wondering how to turn this irritating feature off. Thanks.

Martin,

There is a setting in the Ease of Access settings of Windows 7 that activates a Window by hovering over it. The default appears to be OFF.

Control Panel->Ease of Access->Ease of Access Centre->Make the mouse easier to use
