Hi Martin, I am having a little trouble importing DXF files created by Templot. The files are generated and I can view my track ( or whatever ) using an online DXF viewer but a software package I downloaded called Inkscape just ignores the contents when trying to import them. It mentions in the Inkscape help notes that DXF files should be AutoCAD Version 13 or later - do files exported from Templot conform to this ? I have been using InkScape as was thinking of buying a Silhouette cutter machine for the production of architectural details and was just curious about the DXF import. Thanks Rob |

I’m not sure of the dxf version Templot is but I’ve not had any problems opening and manipulating dxf files in QCAD or CorelDRAW. QCAD can be used for free and is also excellent making files to cut on a silhouette cutter. |

DXF file formats are a moving feast. I wrote the code for the DXF export about 25 years ago and it hasn't changed since. I believe it is broadly compatible with DXF R12. It does however import into most CAD programs, as PHP says. But Inkscape is more artistic drawing package than a CAD. For Inkscape and similar programs you would do better to export an EMF or WMF metafile (EMF for preference) from Templot rather than DXF, and import that. That's at output > export a file... menu item. You can use all the printing settings in the output menu to control what's in the EMF file. And also the generator of course. Keep it simple for creating cutter paths. I just tried an exported EMF in my ancient copy of Inkscape -- it imported fine, and all the objects are editable. cheers, Martin. |

PHP - thanks for your input. I will keep QCAD as an option . Martin, Thanks, EMF export works fine. Hopeful Inkscape can make up for my lack of artistic talent  Rob |
