Hi Martin,

Is it your opinion that a wide carriage dot matrix printer is still fine for use on Templot printouts ? It is a long time since I used one at work, does a 24pin head give an advantage in our situation ? Met a nice chap this afternoon called Carl who is looking to start using Templot and he has access to a couple of dot matrix printers that take the old tractor fed 14.5 x 11 inch paper. He would be using the output to build track on rather than producing works of art so just basic quality should be fine.

Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob,

Templot began life driving a dot-matrix printer. :)  It's a long time since I tried one, but all the code is still in there. Just select impact printer in the printer calibration dialog. Templot then makes a few changes to the output, such as removing all solid area infills.

The important point is to have a Windows printer driver available for it. That might be a bit tricky for the latest versions of Windows. I don't think it makes much difference between 9-pin and 24-pin, the driver should take care of that.

Also supplies of paper and ink ribbons could be an issue.

If it's Z-fold continuous paper, select the banner printing option, and also the banner fill option.

Ultimately it's down to try it and see. :)

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thank you. Ribbons and paper are still easy to come by from a number of suppliers. If using a tractor fed printer used to work and give suitable results there is no reason why it shouldn't still work fine.

All the Epson range ( FX, RX, LQ etc ) are supported by either Epson downloads or Windows 7 Update drivers so should be OK on that score. The interface will be centronics or RS232 so computer will need to be checked for suitable connectors. My this takes me back a few years.

I will let you know if we get something running.

Rob
